Midi-Pyrenees Cottages
Vast horizons, an unspoilt and dramatic landscape of mountains, hills, valleys, lakes and rivers; stunningly beautiful countryside and remarkably well-preserved medieval towns and villages are all waiting for you when you holiday in this part of France; and we have plenty of villas in Midi-Pyrenees for you to select your accommodation.

Midi-Pyrenees, is situated in the south of the country close to the Pyrenees, covering an area stretching from the border with Spain in the south up to the highlands of the Massif Central in the north.

A mostly rural area, the Midi-Pyrenees boasts a stunning countryside of discovery as well as an array of historical sites to explore. The region has some extremely well-preserved chateaux, villages and walled ‘bastide’ towns dating back to the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. For a taste of regional culture, history and heritage try to find time to visit Lourdes, Cahors, Albi and Toulouse.

Attractions such as the UNESCO World Heritage village of Gavarnie and the nearby Cirque de Gavarnie, a huge natural limestone circle in the Pyrenees, have attracted visitors from romantic painters and poets to scientists and botanists since the 16th century.

More modern but equally stunning is the Millau Viaduct, a bridge spanning the river Tarn near Millau which at 343m high is the tallest bridge in the world. Opened in 2004, it is lauded as one of the greatest engineering feats of all time affording spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.

Other attractions include the unspoilt medieval village of Conques, with its narrow streets and the commune of Rocamadour, which attracts visitors and pilgrims to its historic sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Set in a gorge, Rocamadour is perched high on a rocky plateau in what seems like an impossible position. It gives spectacular views over the Alzou Valley, attracting 1.5 million visitors every year.

More modern but equally full of history is the capital of the Midi-Pyrenees region, Toulouse. The only large metropolitan area in the region, Toulouse is situated on the banks of the River Garonne, but it retains a delightfully, intimate ‘village’ feel.

The ‘great outdoors’ is very big here and great walking and cycle routes, waymarked ways and traffic-free cycling are all around. And of course for the expert there are the legendary cols of the Tour de France just waiting for you in the Pyrenees!

The food and drink is as delicious as you would expect in France, with a plentiful array of cheeses and wines available. Armagnac brandy, produced in the south of France, is the drink of choice while dishes on offer are wide, varied and mostly made with fresh produce. One to try is the regional speciality cassoulet toulousain - a sort of bean casserole. Also popular are duck, foie gras and Melsat - a type of sausage very similar to British black pudding.
