This area of France conjures images of magnificent chateaux ,a wonderful winding river and of course its fine wine so finding your fishing cottages in the Loire Valley should be top of your agenda. There are lots to choose from including those within 1 hour of an airport with fishing nearby if you want a break from the car. You can have a private swimming pool, enclosed garden if taking young children or pets or perhaps a cafe or bar nearby, the choice really is yours.
The entire valley has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, due to the architecture and historic significance of the chateaux, the undeniable beauty of the river itself and the very special terroir (environment) producing some of the world’s best wines.
Fishing holiday cottages in the Loire Valley can be near to some lovely towns such as Saumur. This historic town is between the Loire and Thouet rivers and surrounded by vineyards. There are lots of lovely spots on the river or tributary banks to enjoy a day out fishing, some local fishermen even earn a living from it, you can catch zander, carp and pike plus many other species. Whether fishing from the bank or a boat you will be enchanted by the peace and beauty of this valley, until a biting fish interrupts of course! The non-fishers can enjoy the ancient town of Saumur with gleaming tuffeau stone, medieval buildings and troglodyte dwellings carved into the rock. After a day exploring or fishing you can all meet up in a lovely cafe or bar to discuss the ‘catch of the day’.
Why not try your hand at urban or ‘street fishing’ where you can fish right in the centre of towns like Chinon, Tours or Angers. Not far from Angers is Brissac-Quince with the highest castle in France and a large landscaped park once home to the affluent Brissac Dukes.
If you like a bit of night fishing head for Ile Saint Aubin, a rich and colourful patchwork of flood meadows, or Saint-Marturin sur Loire, an area on the northern banks of the river, where the carp will come and find you, so they say!
We have barely scratched the surface of the Loire Valley and not even mentioned carp lakes in the Sarthe Valley most famous for the Le Mans 24 hour car race or Chateauroux, the capital of the Indre department. All we can say is come and see for yourself and the only way to enjoy this magical area is to book your very own self-catering holiday cottages with fishing in the Loire Valley.
