The Cote D’Azur is synonymous with glamour and extravagance. Situated in the heart of the French Riviera, it is home to the iconic destinations of Cannes, Antibes and St Tropez, and right next door to the billionaire playground of Monaco. This is the sort of place where people go to see and be seen, ideally while sipping champagne on the deck of a yacht in Ste Maxime. But there is so much more to discover about this beautiful part of the world.
For quiet beach vacations, choose a seaside cottage near one of the lesser-known resorts such as Hyeres or Le Lavandou, where the locals spend their down time. Or head away from the coast and choose a traditional rural villa off the beaten track – the communes of Draguignan, Fayence and Aups are utterly charming and a world away from the glitz and glamour of the Riviera hotspots.
Coastal cottages near Toulon are a great base for families, as the town boasts a huge range of sights, including a famous rugby stadium, a stunning cathedral, traditional cable cars, and a long stretch of beach of its own. And for hiking holidays, its best to head inland towards the foothills of the Alps. Le Luc, Cuers and Valbonne all offer easy access to a number of walking routes and impressive vistas.
For wine tasting, coastal holiday cottages near Provence will bring you within cycling distance of some of the best vineyards in the country. Brignoles, Le Muy and Lorges are just a few of the best places to sample the local wine without venturing too far from home.
But most people visit the Cote D’Azur for one thing alone: the beaches. There is nothing better than spending a sunny day at a cottage by the sea in the South of France. Explore your surroundings or just watch the yachts sail past the glittering harbours of Port Grimaud, Bandol or Menton. Or choose a sea view cottage on the peaks of Grasse or Roquebrune, where you can enjoy a panoramic view of the coast below.
Glamourous and sunny, or rugged and rural - the Cote D’Azur can be anything you want it to be.
