The South East includes three wonderful regions and possibly the most visited part of France with a wonderful climate, history and varied landscape. With people happy to drive hundreds of miles every year Provence, the Cote-d’Azur and Languedoc-Roussillon must be very special as well as having a fantastic variety of self-catering holiday villas.
You may not be able to spend a year in Provence but a one or two week holiday could be the answer. The region has origins going back to the Greek and Roman times so the culture and history are fascinating and for this reason visitors have travelled from all over the world. Take your pick from cruising along cliff-top roads or sunbathing on the beaches of the wonderful coastline, or venture inland to enjoy breath-taking scenery and stunning market towns and villages. Marseille is the capital and was crucial as a trading route in the days of the French Empire, visit the Old Port and Panier, the oldest quarter of the city.
The glittering coast is known as the Cote-d-Azur, named after its deep cobalt blue water and considered by many to be the most glamorous of all the Mediterranean playgrounds. Yes it is developed in parts but the bits in-between are still as captivating as ever, a real magnet for famous artists past and present. All along the coast are famous resorts such as St Tropez, Cannes or Nice, known to be a rendezvous for the rich and famous.
Languedoc-Roussillon combines a beautiful coastline, beaches the size of deserts and a rugged and rural landscape. It’s bordered by the sea to the south, the Rhone river valley to the east and the Spanish border to the south-west and likes to think it’s wilder, earthier and flatter than the French Riviera. The capital is medieval Montpellier located on the coast which has been heavily influenced by Spanish heritage and culture. As well as being a thriving modern city it has a wonderful old city centre. For outdoor enthusiasts there’s some fabulous walking in the Valley of the Cevennes a very wooded and rural area. Everyone here is pleased to see you and the temperature starts rising from a comfortable 19C as from April.
