Forest of Bowland

The Bowland Fells were declared and an AONB in 1964 and mainly in north-east Lancashire with a small part in North Yorkshire. It’s an area of gritstone fells, deep valleys and peat moorland with its highest point at Ward’s Stone, 561m. There’s a great choice of holiday cottages in the Forest of Bowland and by using the extensive feature list you can easily find your perfect one such as rural but walking distance to a pub, enclosed garden if taking young children or pets, private hot tub or one of our luxury collection, the choice really is yours.

There’s no better place than here to escape busy everyday life in some of the most peaceful and unspoilt walking, riding and cycling country. With great expanses of sky bordering open, wild moorland contrasting with gentle lowland anda patchwork of dry stone walls, pretty farm and villages which are just waiting to be discovered.

Chipping has over 100 years of history and is mentioned in the Domesday Book and Slaidburn, with a quintessential village green beside the River Hodder, has a charming pub, Hark to Bounty, named after the squire’s favourite hound. Dunsop Bridge has been visited by the Queen twice and is known as the exact geographic centre of Great Britain. Fell walkers love to start and finish their walks here with refreshments at Puddleducks Post Office and Tea Rooms. Downham sits at the foot of Pendle Hill and has been used a film location for Whistle down the Wind and more recently Born and Bred. The view from the pub was described as one of the best in England by Queen Victoria and the lively stream is great for feeding the ducks.

From Downham or Barley you an easily climb the famous Pendle Hill, synonymous with the Pendle Witches. On a clear day you can see the Lakeland Fells and Blackpool Tower with the sea glistening in the background.

For a bit more life you may want to visit the market town of Clitheroe which boast a castle, lively shops and a plethora of places to enjoy traditional food and drink. Time it right in August and you can enjoy the very popular Clitheroe Food and Drink Festival. Travel through the scenic and dramatic glacial valley ‘The Trough of Bowland’ to Lancaster with a medieval castle and 19th century prison and Maritime Museum, in Williamson Park you can enjoy woodland walks, a butterfly house and lovely coastal views.
