The town has an interesting history and the focal point is the old square and ancient cross, many of the buildings date back to the 17th century. Sitting on a grassy knoll is the castle with stories to tell from medieval times to the Tudor and Victorian days and make sure you climb the 100 foot tower. Just below the castle is the Helmsley Walled Garden, five beautiful acres including restored glasshouses, a lovely cafe and shop.
There’s a great selection of speciality shops and boutiques plus cafes and cosy pubs to sample the local food and drink. On Friday there’s a market selling local produce, perfect if you’re self-catering. Families will love the town’s open air swimming pool, Yorkshire’s only open air heated pool and open from mid-June to early September.
The choice of walking in the area is vast, the 7 mile waymarked walk from Helmsley to Rievaulx Abbey forms part of the Cleveland Way and offers sweeping views of the town and castle before dropping down through bluebell woods to the abbey ruins. History enthusiasts will love exploring the ruins and there are stunning views from the tea rooms. You have access to some of the most beautiful landscape in Britain including unspoilt rolling heather moors dotted with pretty Yorkshire villages.
