Many English towns are renowned for their historic connections, but only one was the location for one of the World''s most famous confrontations; the 1066 Battle of Hastings. The charming, market town of Battle is a must see destination for visitors interested in history or even those who simply want to enjoy a peaceful holiday in the beautiful Sussex countryside!
The ancient Abbey, which was built in the 11th Century by William the Conqueror, dominates the town. The ruins and buildings can be explored and there is a visitor’s centre with interactive displays and information relating to the famous Battle. There are also numerous medieval and Georgian buildings scattered throughout the town, many of which are listed.
The town really comes alive in Autumn. The festivities begin in late October, with a re-enactment of the Battle of Hastings that draws in performers from all over Europe. Bonfire Night is also a huge attraction and features a procession through the town. In spring, there is a huge medieval fayre with jousting, maypoling and other activities.
There is also some great shopping to be found. Opposite the Abbey, a market takes place on Fridays and Saturdays and is a good place to pick up crafts and local produce. There are also several individual shops and boutiques to explore, selling jewellery, gifts and other items.
Battle and the surrounding area provides a great cottage holiday base from which to explore the many attractions in part of Sussex, including several perfectly preserved castles. The town sits on High Weald, an Area of Outstanding Beauty, where there are many walking trails and opportunities to see rare birds at Battle Great Wood. The coast is also a short drive away, where you will find stunning cliff top walks and the traditional seaside town of Hastings.
