If you are looking for a classic English cottage break, Somerset is the perfect location. As one of Britain’s less populated counties, it is the sort of place where you can walk all day without meeting another soul (except maybe the odd deer). From the rolling meadows of the Somerset Levels, to the vintage charm of Yeovil, and the breath-taking beaches along the north coast – this is England in a nutshell.
Cottages with pools are a great choice for active family holidays in the Somerset countryside, as they bring the countryside right to your doorstep. Explore pretty little towns such as Chard, Bridgwater and Frome, or base yourself in one of the National Parks, at a cottage with a swimming pool near Dulverton or Porlock in Exmoor. The historical city of Bath is easily accessible from anywhere in the country, and it is unlike any English city you’ll ever see.
Foodies should make a beeline for Cheddar, the birthplace of the world’s most famous cheese, before washing down cheese sandwiches with a pint of cloudy cider from local farms such as Sheppy’s (near Taunton and The Quantocks) or Wilkins’ (seven miles west of Wells). Meanwhile, culture vultures will have to schedule in a day at Glastonbury – even when the famous festival is not in season, this creative and historical town is full of musical events and performing arts.
Cottages with private pools near the coast are a great way to explore Somerset’s seaside, from the big sandy expanse of Weston-Super-Mare, with its iconic Grand Pier, to smaller coves such as Minehead and Burnham-on-Sea.
Alternatively, you could just base yourself at a holiday cottage with a pool in the countryside, and enjoy the fresh country air at your leisure. Rural Somerset is full of hidden gems, like the ancient harbour town of Watchet, or the antiques haven of Shepton Mallet.
Somerset is the sort of place where you can turn back time and enjoy the simple things in life, from the comfort of a modern cottage retreat.
