This may be a place most famous for its international music festival but there’s also a lovely choice of luxury cottages in Glastonbury. Add to this a rich culture and heritage to discover plus you can look forward to exploring the unspoilt countryside of Somerset.
The celebrated Glastonbury Festival take place at nearby Pilton every year, except for fallow years normally every five years, and is now considered a major music event in British Culture. Attracting headline acts and people from all over the world it’s a wonderful spectacle particularly if the weather behaves.
This ancient town is home to a number of historic attractions which are loved by many. On the outskirts stands the legendary Glastonbury Tor, a hill with strong links to the legend of King Arthur in addition to many other mythological tales. Climb to the top of the Tor to find the remains of the Church of St. Michael dating back to the 14th century as well as nice views.
In the town is the historic Glastonbury Abbey a must see attraction for most visitors and was once the richest monastery in England. The ruins that remain today are still an impressive site and again have strong connections with the Arthurian legends. To learn more about the past you can visit one of the areas fascinating museums and to see the largest collection of classic cars in the UK head to nearby Sparkford which is home to the Hayne International Motor Museum.
Glastonbury boasts a lovely selection of bijou shops as well as tempting cafes, gastro pubs and restaurants to sample the local food and drink. You can buy everything from crafts, crystals, books, florists, candles and a butcher and baker, many of the products have Fair Trade status, perfect if self-catering.
Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy walking and cycling in the lovely countryside. There is the Mendip Way starting in Wells and going through apple orchards, over downs and through ancient woods before ending at Glastonbury, a heritage walk around the famous and mysterious Avalon Marshes has various routes to set off on. Shapwick Heath National Nature Reserve is steeped in history and wonderful to watch wildlife.
