Bamburgh Cottages

Bamburgh boasts its own very famous castle which has featured in many films including the Harry Potter series; it has been home to the kings of Northumbria since 1894 and is still lived in today. Visitors flock from all over the world to learn about its incredible history, enjoy dramatic views and discover a treasure trove of artefacts and collections retelling the castle’s story over the centuries in fact archaeological digs in the surroundings have unearthed astonishing relics and evidence of prehistoric settlements.

Built on a rocky plateau the castle dominates the coastline with breath taking views out to the Farne Islands and Lindisfarne plus a stunning golden shoreline below, this is a perfect place to enjoy a spectacular sunset on an evening stroll. The long stretches of sand are perfect for horse riding, kite flying and around the nearby lighthouse, when the tide goes out, there’s some great rock pooling.

Bamburgh’s local history tells of the many vessels that came to grief on the off shore reefs which was the driving force behind the areas coastguard strategy in the 18th century, hence the very first lifeboat was launched from here in 1786.

All along the coast are pretty coastal villages, historic castles, ruins and fortifications, the offshore islands are well worth visiting. The Farne Islands are a haven for wildlife with and a magnet for bird and nature enthusiasts with Puffins and seal to spot at certain times of the year. Lindisfarne is accessible by a causeway, when the tide is out, known as the Holy Island it boasts a Priory, a small castle, lovely walks and wildlife to spot as well as two welcoming pubs, cafes and restaurants to enjoy some home cooked traditional food.

As well as a great choice of local organic produce along the coast there a choice of micro-breweries to visit and many of the pubs serve the ‘catch of the day’ so this is a perfect choice for a self-catering holiday.
