The Northumberland coast is a walker’s paradise. With 60 miles of beaches, more than 70 historic castles, and even a holy island, there is always somewhere new to explore.
Cottages by the sea in Northumberland are the ideal starting point for the popular Northumberland Coastal Path. Start at the beautiful seaside town of Berwick-upon-Tweed and follow the route all the way south to the village of Creswell in Derbyshire. Or you could schedule in a gentle half-day hike along one of the popular circular trails, which boast some of the most spectacular views in the county. From a seaside cottage, the entire coast is yours to discover in your own time.
However, if your idea of a great break simply involves some peace and relaxation – don’t worry. There is plenty of that to be found in coastal Northumberland. Choose a coastal cottage near one of the local nature reserves, and spend your days watching colonies of seals, colourful puffins, and flocks of seabirds. Between mid-April and late June, head to the Farne Islands to witness Northumberland’s famous ‘seabird spectacular’, when hundreds of thousands of birds arrive to mate and breed, and then in October, come back to see thousands of fluffy new-born seals – it’s no wonder Sir David Attenborough calls the Northumberland coast his favourite place in Britain.
Coastal holiday cottages offer unparalleled access to the Northumberland scenery, while never being too far away from inland attractions such as Alnwick Castle, Cragside House and, of course, Hadrian’s Wall. Foodies will love to sample local produce such as cheese, ale and Lindisfarne oysters (a local delicacy), and no trip to Northumberland is complete without an extra strong cup of Earl Grey tea – named after a famous former resident.
But in between day trips and hikes, there is nothing better than just relaxing in a sea view cottage and enjoying the unique natural world around you.
