The historic and handsome city of Lancaster is a vibrant place packed with culture and history, impressive architecture and buildings that tell the tale of a fascinating past that extends back to Roman times, medieval England and the Georgian period. Lancaster has been a settlement for over a thousand years and there are examples of its rich history in the buildings and monuments throughout this small city. The oldest parts of Lancaster Castle are believed to be around 1000 years old and many of the canals and walls in the city date back hundreds of years. There are a number of museums in the city including the Maritime Museum which focusses on the Georgian period; a time when Lancaster made its fortune as an important port city.
The city has a buzzing shopping centre, much of which is pedestrianized and a vibrant nightlife. A number of theatres and live music venues play host to well-known acts and there are often exhibitions and gallery displays from the local University''s arts students and photographers. Lancaster is also well-known for the locally produced food which can be sampled in the many diverse cuisines on offer in the town''s restaurants and pubs.
There are plenty of activities to suit families and couples, including canal trips, sailing and sea fishing at the coast and Leighton Moss Nature Reserve. Lovely days out into the surrounding peaceful countryside and visits to Morecambe and Morecambe Bay are also recommended.
