Howardian Hills

The Howardian Hills in Yorkshire take their name from the Howard Family dating back to the 15th Century and the existing family are still landowners today. They are very accessible from York and a great base for self-catering holidays, giving you the time and space to explore rolling hills, woodlands and country estates.

It was designated an AONB in 1987 and although no towns lie within the boundaries the popular market towns of Helmsley and Malton are just outside with a lovely selection of holiday cottages close to the Howardian Hills. By using our extensive feature list you can easily find your perfect property, one of our luxury collection, an enclosed garden if taking children or pets or a pub nearby, the choice really is yours.

The area covers 79 square miles and the highest point is Yearsley Cross at a very accessible 174 metres, with a wonderful network of footpaths and bridleways it is a perfect destination for outdoor enthusiasts. In 2012, to celebrate 25 years since becoming an AONB, twenty-five log seats were installed at iconic viewpoints to sit and get a real flavour of the special landscape of the Howardian Hills.

The country estates and grand houses have shaped the landscape and villages over the years with lovely paths through their parkland and woodlands. In spring you can enjoy bluebells, in summer you will see damselflies and dragonflies over the River Derwent and in autumn and winter lovely colour and silhouetted trees against frosty or snow covered hills. There is a great selection of accommodation as well as pubs, cafes and restaurants all offering a warm welcome to everyone including pet owners.

Walking in the area varies from short flat strolls to much longer hilly walks passing through villages where you can buy traditional food and drink and staying in cottage rentals in the Howardian Hills make all this very accessible.

Castle Howard is a magnificent 18th century residence with 1000 acres of wonderful park land; dogs are very welcome to explore the grounds should you take your four legged friend. Nowadays it is a thriving rural estate open to the public and not to be missed, the very recent TV series Victoria was filmed there as have many other period dramas.
