For a day out that is suitable for all the family, Paradise Wildlife Park is a must. There are more than 400 animals housed here and you can even arrange for the kids to spend time shadowing a zookeeper so they can earn more about the conservation and animal care work that goes on at the park. Other attractions of the park include a woodland railway and a café where you can watch the tigers while you have a snack.
Hertfordshire is also considered to be the home of the oldest pub in England, although others do dispute this. Ye Olde Fighting Cocks is in St Albans and there are stories that suggest Oliver Cromwell visited the pub in the 17th century although the inn is said to date from the 8th century. Those who take the time to visit the pub can also visit St Albans Cathedral, a site where early drafts of the Magna Carta were put together.
Knebworth House is a magnificent stately home and it sits in 250 acres of countryside. It was formerly the home of Edward Bulwer Lytton, the novelist. The gardens are a great place to relax, but there is also an adventure playground and a dinosaur trail that is ideal for keeping the kids entertained.
