At the heart of the National Park, Windermere has a vibrant atmosphere close to England’s largest lake and surrounded by beautiful countryside.
The small town of Windermere is positioned beside the banks of (lake) Windermere and along with its neighbouring town of Bowness-on-Windermere form two of the most popular holiday destinations in the Lake District.
Its central position makes it the perfect base from which to explore the beautiful Lake District National Park and offers easy access to the water where you can take one of the famous steamers or launches that regularly depart and arrive throughout the day; it’s a great way to fully appreciate the majesty of the area with stunning views of the mountainous landscape all around.
In town there is a bustling atmosphere where you’ll find a good selection of independent shops, cafes, restaurants and cosy pubs. There also plenty of excellent visitor attractions close by such as the Lakeland Motor Museum, Lake District Visitor Centre or Wray Castle, or why not visit the Steamboat Museum itself and learn about the fascinating history of these iconic craft.
Young and old alike will enjoy a visit to the World of Beatrix Potter where her famous animal characters and all of her stories are brought to life; cross the lake to visit Hill Top, the author’s own home, now lovingly restored as in tribute to her life and work.
Situated a short distance to the east is the pretty village of Staveley, positioned between the River Kent and Gowan; and handily placed for both the Lakes hot spots and the beautiful Kent Valley.
