Hawkshead, Near and Far Sawrey Cottages
Hawkshead is one of the Lake District’s most picturesque villages, with its whitewashed houses and cobbled streets.

The village has a long historical and cultural past with connections to both William Wordsworth, who attended the local grammar school and Beatrix Potter, whose former home, Hill Top, at nearby Sawrey, is the place where she wrote many of her books. Hawkshead was also, in times gone by, a prosperous medieval wool town.

Almost every building has a story to tell or history to reveal in this delightful Lakeland village, its cobbled streets and whitewashed cottages huddle around secluded courtyards, giving the area a sense of intimacy. There''s a lot to explore here, and every nook and cranny of the town offers fine architectural features, from jettied frontages and external stairways to old archways, alleyways and an old spinning gallery or two. You''ll also find a great selection of age-old coaching houses and charming tea rooms.

Nearby Grizedale Forest provides opportunities for excellent outdoor activities; youngsters will love the tree top adventures at Go Ape, while the less daring can enjoy pony and horse riding along the many miles of bridleways and forest tracks in the area.

This area like most of the Lake District has wonderful walks and cycling routes and is centrally located with Lake Windermere to the east and Coniston Water to the west.

Come and explore this truly historic and wonderfully picturesque village with stunning Hawkshead holiday cottages as your base.
