Located on a loop of the River Eden, overlooked by the Pennines and close to the Lake District, cottages with hot tubs in Appleby are perfect to explore this wonderful unspoilt area of North West England. The town has kept its old world charm and there is nothing better than relaxing in hot bubbles under a starlit sky at the end of the day with family or friends.
With history going back to before the Norman Conquest the then market town of Appleby is home to a number of listed buildings seemingly untouched for hundreds of years. There is a castle and keep at the brow of the high street and a walk along Boroughgate will take you back to medieval England, at the north end is the Moot Hall dating back to 1596. There are now a lovely variety of shops, cafes and pubs to tempt you in to sample the local food and drink.
The town attracts a variety of visitors and is the starting point for a variety of walks suitable for all levels. The riverside walks are perfect to escape busy life and you can immerse yourself in the tranquil countryside just 5 minutes for the town centre. The River Eden is beautiful and offers great opportunities for anglers with some glorious spots to cast off from. Perhaps the most impressive feature of the Eden Valley is the ancient Appleby Castle, which overlooks the river. Built in the early 1100s, the castle consists of a medieval keep and a fine mansion both now Grade I buildings.
Another attraction is the famous Carlisle Railway which stops at the station across the river and a day trip is recommended in either direction to enjoy the varied landscape. The more energetic may want a more challenging walk in the Lake District or North Pennines and there are lots to choose from.
We can’t go without mentioning the Appleby Horse Fair every June with hundreds of horse drawn traditional Gypsy caravans arriving to exercise, display and trade their horses. Hot tub breaks go very quickly in Appleby so make sure yours today.
