The cottage is a great gateway to the nearby Durham Dales where the scenery and surroundings can only be described as breathtaking. For couples who enjoy a theatre break, Durham offers the Gala Theatre which is open all year round.
Local historic attractions include Durham’s castle, cathedral and the city walls. The River Wear runs through the city and guests can enjoy a romantic boat trip or a glass of champagne by the riverside. Filled with quality restaurants, bistros, cafes and bars, the city is thriving at night and there is often street entertainment to enjoy including the Lumiere Festival, jazz festival, book week, arts week and many more. Durham University can be easily reached from Winter Cottage making this the perfect location to stay for graduation and student visits. For those who love shopping, there are many designer boutiques in the city, as well as the famous Metrocentre, which is situated in Gateshead near Newcastle upon Tyne, approximately an hour away. Many National Trust and heritage sites are within easy reach including Barnard Castle, Raby Castle, Bowes Museum, Beamish and High Force Waterfall.
Winter Cottage is a large terraced house, on the ground floor there is a living room with many original features and also a large dining room/kitchen. There is a ground floor bathroom and on the first floor, there is a double bedroom and a shower room. Outside, relax in the garden area on a summers evening with a glass of wine. Spent a lovely, sunny weekend at Winter Cottage this Easter. It was much larger than expected, very well equipped and comfortably furnished for 2 people. Some lovely country walks within a few yards of the property and a couple of welcoming pubs close by. An excellent location for those wanting to get away from it all yet easier than expected to get into both Durham and Bishop Aukland and around 30 minutes from the coast and we did all three. The owner was very friendly and contacted us before and after our visit to make sure all was as it should be. The garden was secure and safe for the dog, a lovely sheltered sun trap, though we didn't get the chance to sit outside. Due to a knee problem, I found it difficult to use the shower as it has quite a high step to the corner entrance so the downstairs bathroom was very much appreciated. Hope to visit again when my knee is better and take advantage of some of the public footpaths and explore the beautiful local area more fully.
