Description

Perfect for large groups, Whitton Lodge is an impressive house with a wood burner and 9 en-suite bedrooms, just a short stroll from Hardwick Hall.

Think big! With nine impressive en-suite bedrooms, sleeping 20 people in total, Whitton Lodge is a superb 400 year old, stone-built house, which was once part of the famous Hardwick Estate.
Each of the nine bedrooms have been tastefully decorated, and designed to offer flexibility, with the large rooms sleeping between two and four. There are three rooms situated in an annexe in the courtyard area, with direct access to the beautiful garden. The other six rooms are accessed by two staircases within the main house.
Whitton Lodge’s living space is spacious and contemporary, with the added comfort of a wood burner for those cosy winter evenings. The property boasts a living room with enough seating for your whole party, and two kitchens, which are well-equipped and provide you with everything you’ll need to cater for a larger party. A light dining room is located in the very heart of the house, with probably one of the largest dining tables you have ever seen, fantastic for a gathering of family and friends.
Whitton Lodge comes complete with a lovely lawned area with mature flower beds, and a large courtyard with outdoor seating and BBQ, ideal for a spot of al fresco dining.
If location is what you’re looking for then look no further! A gentle stroll takes you to the famous Hardwick Hall, built in the 1590s by ’Bess of Hardwick’, the second most powerful woman in England, after Queen Elizabeth I. The Hall, and even its original tapestries and textiles, have survived unaltered for four centuries, and is now opened to the public by the National Trust. Near the estate’s original water mill, still in operation and open to visitors, is the Hardwick Inn, also built in the 16th century.
A little further away are the delights of the Peak District, including Chatsworth House and the town of Matlock, as well as some stunning countryside. Just a few miles away you will discover the historic market town of Chesterfield which acts as the gateway to the Peak District. Chesterfield is famous for its 14th century church with a crooked spire twisting from the centre. Also popular with visitors is the semi-rural 17th-century mansion of Bolsover Castle, set high on a wooded hilltop looking west towards the heights of the wonderful Peak District.
In nearby Nottinghamshire, visit Nottingham’s Castle or Sherwood Forest to go on a Robin Hood hunt! Close by is Teversal, a small village in Nottinghamshire which is surrounded by the Teversal Trail Visitors Centre, offering great access to the Teversal and Pleasley trails network, perfect for enjoying a variety of walks and cycle routes.
Whitton Lodge really does have the most fabulous location to enjoy with family and friends, we’re sure you won’t be disappointed. Shop and restaurant 400 yards, pub 150 yards.

This home provides an excellent space for large parties. The communal areas are very spacious so it is easy to have 20+ people sitting around one table or in the lounge. It is a very warm and comfortable place to stay. Having a pub within walking distance is a definite bonus and it is handy for visiting Hardwick Hall. There are a few minor things that could be tweaked, for example there is nowhere to hang coats after a large group returns from a wet walk. There is a (completely understandable) request not to move sofas, but the lovely log burner is then behind one if the sofas and therefore can’t be fully appreciated. I also felt that the house had been too modernised, which made it very comfortable but removed any sense of being in a 400 year old building. These are all very minor things, none of which change the fact that this is a lovely place to stay with an extremely friendly and helpful owner. The only real issue was the very noisy water pump which meant that everyone was woken up with the earliest riser.

As the first group to stay we did test all the equipment. We did encounter a few problems with the electrical supply when cooking and the hot water in the stable bedrooms. However the owners were superb and did everything humanly possible to help us. Even cooked some of our Xmas lunch in their own oven next door! So even with the issues we had, we could not fault the way it was dealt with.
