Willow Barn Cottage (ref UKC2811) and Barn Owl Cottage (ref UKC2812) are quaint, converted cottages which have been tastefully upgraded and offer welcoming accommodation of a very good standard. Outside is a shared gravelled seating area, a suitable place to enjoy a morning coffee or relax in the evening overlooking open farmland. The Old Forge (ref W40295) is a sympathetically converted, detached 200-year old cottage retaining many character features, and has an enclosed garden. All properties have barn owls for neighbours - they nest in the adjoining barn!
The dog friendly properties are tucked away in a peaceful lane adjacent to the owner’s home on the edge of the picturesque village of Beckermet. They are situated close to Whitehaven with its historic harbour, marina and shops, which has twice been named as a Brita resort, and St Bees with its expanse of sandy beaches.
This is an ideal location from which to explore the wonderful Western Fells of the Lake District National Park and the Cumbrian coastline. Ennerdale Water and Wastwater, once voted ’Britain’s Best View’ and nearby Scafell Pike, are within easy driving distance. For a superb day out, Muncaster Castle also has beautiful gardens and an internationally renowned Owl Sanctuary, not to mention the amazing views from its elevated position. Day permits for trout fishing are available within half a mile. Beach 1½ miles. Shop 3¾ miles, pub and restaurant ½ mile.

We liked the cottage very much. It was very well equiped and comfortable. We booked very last minute after minimal research, so with hind-sight, we would have booked a place with a fire/stove, in early January. We were told it was near St Bees, when actually it is next to Sellafield, which might bother some people. We took our 2 small dogs, and if there is a down-side to the cottage, it is that the living space is very small. [The bedroom is ample]. With 2 dog beds in the living room there wasn't much room to move about! The space in the cottage has been very cleverly used, so there isn't a solution to this! The directions to find the place would have been very annoying if we had followed them from Kirkby Stephen. If you are coming from the north or north-east, it is surely better to follow the A66 to Cockermouth, and then go south down the west coast. Sorry not to fill in all the rest, but I can't do the photo thing and as a Welcome Cottage owner myself , I find it difficult to score things out of 10! I find I can't submit without an overall score. Please attach no significance to this number as it depends on what you think of as 'excellent', and for whom.

Disappointed no secure garden area for the dogs Did find it to be a long drive to the actual Lake District

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner; There is a sitting out area in front of the cottage in which dogs can be put on an extendable lead, there is also a lane and cycle path leading to the sea which is useful for walking dogs.

Loved this cottage. Hosts were very welcoming. Loved that dogs were welcome. Cottage had everything you needed, including a bath which was perfect after all the walking. Some lovely walks to be done, close to the lakes and very close to the beach. Didn't see another person on the beach which was lovely. Perfect for a nice private get away. Nice local pub full of friendly people. Would definitely go again.

A cosy, dog-friendly cottage in a quiet village with two (dog-friendly) pubs. Tea and coffee provided on arrival. Well equipped and comfortable. Plenty of local information available with maps for local walks. Easy to drive to both local and further attractions. Lovely beach a short walk away. Both village pubs provide good value food - Monday Date Night at the Royal Oak, (£25 for two meals and wine) and Quiz night on Wednesday at the White Mare.
