Wow, if you want to have a peaceful break with stunning views, this cottage is just what you need! We'd never been to this part of Yorkshire before and will definitely go back. The cottage is certainly remote (approx 3 miles from the village of Reeth), but this is part of the charm and we'd certainly recommend going to West Cottage if you're looking to get away from the hussle and bussle of busy lives, relaxing in this beautiful corner of our country.

Upon arrival we were greeted with a welcome pack of milk, biscuits & wine. This basically summed up our stay in the cottage, thoughtful, enjoyable and practical! The cottage was very clean and very well equipped. We even cooked a full Sunday dinner on our first night. Each room had clean towels and fresh bedding and the washer/dryer in the kitchen ensured we had clean things if needed. Previous reviews have described the cottage as shabby and tired, we didn’t get that impression at all! It was very comfortable and let’s be honest, it is a holiday cottage in the Dales not a luxury apartment in Sandbanks! Kitchen had everything needed including ample crockery, pots, pans and waste disposal facilities. Living room was comfortable with new tv, sky free view, log burner and storage heater. It also had loads of games, books and local literature and guides. Bedrooms were clean with adequate storage and the beds were very comfortable. Each had a storage heater. The cottage had three bathrooms that were all very clean and the downstairs one was a godsend for washing the dog down. The on suite one did have a slow drain but the water did drain away. We stayed the second week in January so the cottage was cold upon arrival. A fire had already been laid for us and the downstairs soon warmed up. It took a good day for the rest of the cottage to warm up with the storage heaters but once these had been running for a while the whole cottage was pleasant throughout our stay. We took extra logs with us and there was enough supplied by the owner for a couple of days. Logs/kindling were readily available in all the surrounding areas. The views were breathtaking and the walks amazing, very rural but extremely peaceful and enjoyable. Loads of local pubs and plenty of shops in the bigger surrounding villages. We were out all day and enjoyed relaxing nights in the cottage. In summer it would be fantastic to just sit on the patio with a barbecue and a glass of whatever you fancy. Would we stay again - definitely! So much so we have booked the cottage again in October. Lovely, clean, well equipped cottage in fantastic surroundings, what more could you want!

This is a cottage for summer lets only as its heating is inadequate and the cottage was therefore very cold. The wood burner looks nice but is the least efficient wood burner I have ever encountered and the storage heaters (one of which wasn't even working) simply aren't up to the job of heating a stone built cottage like this. The bathrooms were all particularly cold, not helped by each of the bathrooms upstairs having an odd industrial metal sheeting floor. The downstairs bathroom had bare flagstones. None of the WCs flushed properly.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the Agency; Thank you very much for taking the time to leave a review. I am sorry that you found the cottage cold last January. Normally the storage heaters work well and the log burner is very popular with our guests. The flagstones throughout the downstairs of the property are a real traditional feature, we are sorry if you found these uninviting. We provide a helpline up until 9pm 7 days a week and we would have been only too pleased to bring some additional heating up for you if we knew you required it. The toilets have been checked and are all flushing correctly. We do hope that we will see you in The Dales again soon.

Living room looking very tired, the two sofa's need replacing and there was a general run down appearance. Request of having the two single beds to be converted to a double was ignored. There were no matches to light the log burner and late on a Saturday evening nowhere to buy some. The spare logs supposedly left in the barn were non existent, the cupboard was bare. The views of the Dales were stunning and the cottage location beautiful but that's not enough to recommend this property.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the agency; Thank you very much for leaving a review. Your suggestion to replace the sofa is being very seriously considered by the owner and I am sure that an improvement will be made shortly. I am sorry but your request to convert the two single beds was received too late for the caretaker to do this. This was explained to you shortly before you arrived (rather than being ignored). I am also sorry that there were no matches available as there normally are – we will ensure that the caretaker is aware of this. The fire is always made up ready and there is an initial supply of logs provided. There are several places to buy logs for the rest of your stay in nearby Reeth. We agree, the cottage is in a truly stunning location and we are pleased that you enjoyed the beautiful views.
