Description

This is in a perfect location for exploring the Brecon Beacons, Black Mountains and beyond.

Indoor heated swimming pool/hot tub
BHS Approved Riding Centre

The ancient farmhouse at Werngochlyn dates back to the 12th century. It nestles in open farmland underneath the Skirrid Mountain and the four comfortable holiday cottages are sympathetically converted from stone farm buildings set around the farmyard. The setting is perfect for children of all ages (adults too!). There is plenty of room to run around and explore – and plenty of animals to befriend…. a pair of Kune-kune miniature pigs, a very large Gloucester Old Spot, a donkey, goats, sheep, chickens (you can collect your own eggs for breakfast if you want to), ducks, dogs, cats and loads of horses and ponies – including a tiny rescue pony named Tinkerbell.
You could stay around the farm all day – with a heated, indoor swimming pool, hot tub, games room and riding school on site with tuition for all ages from 4 years plus and then a BBQ in the evening. There are footpaths running directly from the farm and dogs are welcome. You are ideally place to explore the Brecon Beacons, Black Mountains, Usk and Wye Valleys and the fantastic countryside that surrounds the nearest market town of Abergavenny which is only 3 miles away – home of the Food Festival. It boasts good shops and a market, a cinema, theatre, castle and museum as well as good choice of pubs, cafes and restaurants including Michelin starred ‘Walnut Tree’ which is within walking distance of the farm. An 18-hole golf course and driving range is only ½ mile away. An enjoyable stay that will have you wanting to return. Shop 3 miles.

All on ground floor: Living/dining room. Kitchen. 2 bedrooms: 1 double, 1 bunk or single (for children). Bathroom with shower over bath and toilet.

Central heating, electricity and bed linen included. Cot. High chair. Electric cooker. Shared laundry room. Wi-fi. Sitting-out area and picnic bench. Barbecue. Ample parking. Shared indoor swimming pool, open from Easter, closed winter. Please enquire when booking. Shared games room. Two pets welcome, under strict control please (livestock). WTB 3 Dragons. We booked cowshed cottage as it quoted the cottage was all on one level. Having a disabled and partially blind wife - this info was important to us. The cottage was in fact on several different levels. There is a huge step from the uneven uphill road to actually get into the cottage then more little steps inside which leads to different rooms. Not being able to see and not too good on her feet my wife did trip trying to get over these. There were covers covering the furniture. One was covered with bits and dog hair. Their was no heating on and the thermostat didn't work. We found out that it was because it was controlled by the owner and we had to ask him if he could put it on because being a rainy and cold may day it was freezing in the cottage. Our 6 year old soon got a chill and was unwell for most of our stay. The paths around the cottage and leading down to the farm are covered in potholes and very uneven. Not at all suitable for disabled people. My daughter did enjoy the pool and horse riding which cost £17.50 for half an hour. It could be a smashing little place if it was done up a little.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner; We are so sorry that you found the accommodation not suitable for you and your family. Unfortunately our cottages are not completely designed for disabled people. They are converted from very old stone farm buildings - and sadly we have what we have regarding sloping floors and door sizes. (I'm not sure that a farm is perhaps a good choice for your wife?) - although we have had many people with all kinds of special needs that have really enjoyed their holidays here. Usually customers telephone me, or discuss their specific criteria to the Booking Agency before they book their holiday. I have checked with the Agency to make sure that we, or they, hadn't got your information wrong. I would have perhaps pointed you in the direction of Granary Cottage which has french doors leading out to the garden as a better option and with more room for your wife. Cowshed Cottage is our smallest unit. However, that aside, my husband immediately provided a step to help access the cottage when you arrived, and continually asked if you were quite happy with the arrangement. We were standing by to help out in any way possible if you had brought the problem to our attention. Indeed you thanked him and assured us that all was well both then and throughout your stay. We have provided wheelchair ramps to aid access in the past and the step is clearly visible in the exterior pictures of the cottage in the website. We do put cotton throws over our sofas. People bring dogs (or have kids with muddy shoes) and they can be easily washed. You did mention the throws and I noticed that you had removed them. That was fine, but I did ask you to replace them as the booking conditions state that pets are not to be left unattended in the cottage and are not to go on furniture or in bedrooms, and unfortunately these were not adhered to. We do have to be mindful that some of our guests may be allergic to dogs and we have to cater for non- pet owners too. Covers can be easily washed - I am surprised that you didn't mention that one was dirty - it must have been overlooked somehow - but again, that could have been fixed in an instant. Regarding heating - all our cottages have independent small heaters - but we immediately put on the central heating when asked and beforehand if we feel that the weather is chilly. (They do all have thermostats on each radiator.) I am very surprised that you found Cowshed Cottage in any way cold - no-one has ever complained before. Stone cottage hold their heat - and Cowshed Cottage has a cottage either side of it which makes it particularly cosy. As you know, we live right on the premises - and you were the only guests to require extra ...... but the heating can go on - no problem - which we did straightaway on your request. We recognise that the month of May may prove variable to say the least ..... but there again, everyone's needs are so different. Sorry that I have put such a detailed response, but I would like our guests to know that we do take feed-back seriously - and we will bend over backwards to provide accommodation and services that will enhance the Werngochlyn experience. And we are on hand to willingly help with any problem.

A very nice stay, my grand son keeps asking us when we are going again as he really enjoyed his holiday. His highlight was feeding the animals and playing in the pool. .

This place is a wonderfully placed hidden gem and we can't wait to go back. If you're looking for peace and tranquillity then this id the place to go, the friendly atmosphere is a bonus. The hosts were lovely, down to earth and friendly and nothing was too much trouble. Collecting your own fresh eggs for breakfast was delightful, the eggs were so fresh and yummy. I made friends with plenty of farm animals too which was an awesome experience. We hope to go back soon.

hot tub great. accommodation warm . kitchen had been updated rest of accommodation tired looking shabby no towel rails in the bathroom. Drive in dreadful condition. Swimming pool used on sunday 25 march not very clean water. the floor around swimming pool and hot tub dirty. we never used the changing rooms as in a very poor state.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner; Thanks for your comments which we truly take account of. The drive was particularly in a bad state when you were with us. It has taken a real pounding this Winter, and was completely covered with snow drifts only a couple of weeks beforehand - just as we were about to put it right. The work has now been done and is hugely improved - but we are sorry that we couldn't get to it - either because of manpower, available tractors or materials, before your stay. We have not had any previous complaints about the changing rooms and the pool was in massive use the week that you were here. It is cleaned daily and we always appreciate anyone letting us know if it needs more attention of any description at any time and we will jump to it. The cottage has had lots of new furniture - beds, wardrobes and the like. We try to keep a rural feel to it - but unfortunately this doesn't always suit everyone's taste. (There is a heated towel rail in the bathroom behind the door?) We do hope that these points didn't spoil your holiday and that we might see you again in the future.
