Spacious, exceptionally well equipped holiday home in a great location, peaceful and rural but only 4 miles from Whitby. The local shops are wonderful. Baker, butcher, fish and chip shop, Spar shop and pub all nearby. Buses are around half hourly if you want to leave the car behind. The drive is narrow, a bit of manoeuvring required for a large car but we did fit 2 cars in, just, one in front of the other. There is no WiFi in the house but the pub has it.

Nice quiet location but close to the coast and the North Yorks Moors. Plenty of room and very comfortable accommodation. Bonus being able to take our dog. Be aware that there is only parking for one vehicle.

Overall, I would say that we enjoyed our stay at the Weatheroak cottage. The accommodation is very spacious and lends itself to a large family. However, we did feel that the mattresses could have been better quality and the cleanliness needs to be addressed as the grill to the oven was dirty on arrival. The location was good for access to local areas/visiting centres and Whitby itself, with beautiful views of the rolling hills.

We have stayed before mainly because of the location. But this particular time we were very disappointed. The place was extremely dirty the windows totally dawbed up. It had a very nasty smell to the place the beds were shocking uncomfortable. We were going to write a comment in the visitors book only to discover others had and these had been cut out what a joke. Such a shame because the location is stunning. These people go for a quick buck and totally turn a blind eye to customers complaining.

We booked to stay at Weatheroak because it was a 4 star property that allowed a dog. The pictures of the cottage seemed nice but it did look dated. Unfortunately, the property was very disappointing and no where near a 4 star rating, it should only be worthy of being rated as 2 stars at most due to the appalling state of cleanliness and I feel that is probably generous. We felt like going straight home and not staying but we had not had a holiday for a while and decided to stick it out. The cottage was absolutely filthy, the floors were grimy and sticky, you did not want to take your shoes off. Many of the electric fittings are really old and some switches do not work. We had to clean the kitchen ourselves before we unpacked our food. The microwave had ingrained dirt in it, the toaster had a years worth of crumbs under it, the cupboards were falling apart and full of dirt and we had to wash all the cutlery before we used it. We didn't feel like we wanted to cook in there. One of the strip light fittings had broken glass. There was damp around the back door. The bathroom had damp and mould on the walls as did the bath and tiles and the tiles looked like it had never been cleaned. It was appalling and got on your chest every time you went in there. The floorboards upstairs creaked so badly that you felt you might fall through the floor. We dared not get up in the night to go to the toilet or everyone would be woken up. The bed in the double bedroom upstairs creaked badly and the headboard was loose. My wife ended up having to sleep on the sofa as she could not sleep in there and I had to wear ear plugs. It was so uncomfortable. The upstairs toilet had a repair to the floor with DUCK-TAPE all the way around it, we were worried siting on it in case it collapsed. The banister upstairs was broken, fortunately our party did not have small children as the worry would be that they could trap their heads in the hole. There was dirt behind every piece of furniture it was clear any cleaning was purely superficial. We wrote in the guest and suggestions books but it is clear that poor reviews are ripped out as evident by the number of pages torn out. For a place that takes dogs, the garden in not secure with fences either side of the property, so your dogs or children for that matter could wander around the front. Overall, this was the worst place we had ever stayed in. It is a shame because the location is great, Sleights itself is lovely and the Plough an Eskdale Fisheries offered good food. AVOID !

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner; We are sorry that the cleanliness of the property did not meet your expectations; however we have not had any problems before. The property is carpeted so we are surprised regarding your comments on the floor boards. Regarding the toilet there was a small piece of duct tape visible due to a plumbing repair that had taken place recently. The bannister has since been repaired. The property is surrounded by fields and we do not advertise the garden as being 100% secure.
