Watermouth Castle offers a rare combination of opportunities – for not only do visitors have the chance to live in a castle, but they can also enjoy free entry to one of the West Country’s premier tourist attractions during their stay, when the Park is open to the public. Within the splendid castle itself, there are seven superb apartments, an indoor heated swimming pool, a museum, a choice of theme attractions, and some fascinating water displays. Outside, the castle’s 50-acre estate features wonderful landscaped gardens, with plenty of space for strolling and relaxing, and glorious woodland walks. There are ducks and waterfowl to admire on the lake outside the walls, and beautiful views from the castle over Watermouth Bay and its harbour, where there are slipway facilities for visitors’ boats, as well as moorings for larger craft (by arrangement with the harbourmaster).
The castle is a true example of a Victorian folly, completed in the mid 19th century by the Basset family. Now extensively restored by the current owners, its self-contained holiday apartments are reached through an archway in the south court, where the indoor heated swimming pool is available exclusively to apartment residents. Harbour Apartment (ref FHH) and West Tower Apartment (ref FHJ) are west-facing and overlook the harbour, Rhododendron Apartment (ref FHM), South Court Apartment (ref FHP) and Basset Apartment (ref FHL) overlook the south court towards the wooded hills. Penn-Curzon Apartment (ref FHK) has sea views from the living room, and Clock Tower Apartment (ref UKC2234) has sea views from the living room and bedrooms. Each property offers fibre optic broadband.
A separate part of the castle, open to the public, contains the fascinating museum collections, including a Victorian kitchen, animated displays, mechanical musical instruments, a large model railway and a unique arcade of pier slot machines. In the underground theatre is the Water Show Extravaganza, reputedly one of the best fountain shows in the world, a thrilling mix of lights, music and water. Outside in the grounds are further family entertainments, including traditional rides and slides, fascinating water features, children’s play areas, a ‘Gnomeland’, crazy-golf, a maze, the 250 meter Thunder Luge Toboggan Run, and much, much more.
In an area of outstanding natural beauty, Watermouth Castle enjoys an incomparable setting on rising ground, commanding views over the bays and cliffs of the magnificent coastline stretching away to the east. Take a woodland walk through the estate to the picturesque, award-winning village of Berrynarbor, or visit the coastal village of Combe Martin (less than 3 miles to the east) – famous not only for its sandy coves, inlets and majestic headlands but also as ‘the gateway to the Exmoor National Park’. Combe Martin offers a choice of shops and cafes, and one of Devon’s oldest inns! Ilfracombe is only a five minute drive away to the west, with a range of seaside attractions, good shops and a golf course, and visitors can enjoy miles of golden sand at nearby Woolacombe and Croyde Bay. Superb cliff-top scenery and beautiful wooded valleys make this one of North Devon’s most scenic areas – as well as a paradise for walkers. Beach 500 yards. Shops 2 miles, pub 1 mile.
Please note that music may filter into the pool area from the antique Mortier organ between 10am and 6pm.

Pros - Fantastic Location, Access to Family Attraction attached as part of price, Swimming pool (with timed access), clean (including Covid-clean) Cons - Apartment itself; whilst we appreciate that it is an older building with limitations on what can be done in terms of 'mod cons', kitchen was tiny and hardly any worktop space (particularly considering no dishwasher so need space to cook and wash up for meals for 6 people), water pressure in shower was barely more than a dribble. Beds could be updated; mattresses lumpy and uncomfortable. Whilst some allowance should be made for the limitations placed on hosts due to Covid, some aspects just felt 'mean'; for example no soap in bathrooms and no 'welcome / amenities book' - usually expect something that would advise you of local area, nearest supermarket, post box etc. tips for the flat (for example we didn't find the clothes airer until our last day, hidden in a cupboard marked 'gas valve' (so we didn't open it), details of recycling etc. Accessibility - was mention in advance of steps to access the apartment itself, not that there were two more flights of stairs within the apartment itself, from front door up to 2 beds and bathroom and again up to children's room and main living/dining space. Accessibility of park itself is pretty limited, very very steep with no alternative routes via steps or gradual incline in most areas and it was pretty treacherous in wet weather. Don't begrudge them the natural geography but feel they ought to be more up front about it; during park open days we encountered several groups of struggling older people trying to spend time with their grandchildren but having to brace themselves against the 'mini golf' archway wall or simply sit at the base of the hill and wait for the younger members of their group to go up and have fun and come back to them. The final thing to say was that, whilst the staff were polite, we did feel like guests were an inconvenience and several interactions ended with sign offs along the lines of 'if you could leave quickly on your last day' or 'remember to turn the light off when you leave'; don't exactly scream 'welcome, welcome, enjoy your stay'
