Watermouth Castle offers a rare combination of opportunities – for not only do visitors have the chance to live in a castle, but they also enjoy unlimited, free entry to one of the West Country’s premier tourist attractions during their stay (please note the castle and theme park will be closed between 29th October 2018 and 5th April 2019 inclusive). Within the splendid castle itself, there are seven superb apartments, an indoor heated swimming pool, a museum, a choice of theme attractions, and some fascinating water displays. Outside, the castle’s 50-acre estate features wonderful landscaped gardens, with plenty of space for strolling and relaxing, and glorious woodland walks. There are ducks and waterfowl to admire on the lake outside the walls, and beautiful views from the castle over Watermouth Bay and its harbour, where there are slipway facilities for visitors’ boats, as well as moorings for larger craft (by arrangement with the harbourmaster).
The castle is a true example of a Victorian folly, completed in the mid 19th century by the Bassett family. Now extensively restored by the current owner, its self-contained holiday apartments are reached through an archway in the south court, where the indoor heated swimming pool is available exclusively to apartment residents. Harbour Apartment (ref FHH) and West Tower Apartment (ref FHJ) are west-facing and overlook the harbour, Rhododendron Apartment (ref FHM), South Court Apartment (ref FHP) and Bassett Apartment (ref FHL) overlook the south court towards the wooded hills, and Penn-Curzon Apartment (ref FHK) has sea views from the living room.

A separate part of the castle, open to the public, contains the fascinating museum collections, including a Victorian kitchen, animated displays, mechanical musical instruments, a large model railway and a unique arcade of pier slot machines, all in working order. In the underground theatre is the Water Spectacular, reputedly one of the best fountain shows in the world, a thrilling mix of lights, music and water. Outside in the grounds are further family entertainments, including traditional rides and slides, fascinating water features, children’s play areas, a ‘Gnomeland’, themed crazy-golf, and much, much more all of which earned Watermouth Castle a place in the finals of the South West Tourism ‘Large Visitor Attraction Of The Year’ Award in 2005.

Watermouth Castle enjoys an incomparable setting on rising ground, commanding views over the bays and cliffs of the magnificent coastline stretching away to the east. Take a woodland walk through the estate to the picturesque, award-winning village of Berrynarbor, or visit the coastal village of Combe Martin (less than 3 miles to the east) – famous not only for its sandy coves, inlets and majestic headlands but also as ‘the gateway to the Exmoor National Park’. Combe Martin offers a choice of shops and cafes, and one of Devon’s oldest inns! Ilfracombe is only a five minute drive away to the west, with a range of seaside attractions, good shops and a golf course, and visitors can enjoy miles of golden sand at nearby Woolacombe and Croyde Bay. Superb cliff-top scenery and beautiful wooded valleys make this one of North Devon’s most scenic areas – as well as a paradise for walkers. Beach 500 yards. Shops 2 miles, pub 1 mile.
Note: Music may filter into the pool area from the antique Mortier organ between 10am and 6pm.

This is the 2nd time we have stayed here but the first time in the Harbour Apartment and the view is great. We had the pool all to ourselves all week which was good, and the park also to ourselves in the evening. It was a bit cold for the first couple of days we stayed as weather was not good and think where it had been empty the week before it had not been heated, but after a couple of days it did get warmer. The apartment was clean and spacious. The kitchen area was well equipped with everything you could possibly need for self-catering holiday. Since our last visit there is now wi-fi available in each room so can get access to internet which there was not on our first visit. My children enjoyed the rides around the park and we spent a couple of days there which they enjoyed, the wristband which is given when you arrive you just show to get on the rides, although don't tighten it up too tight otherwise wont get it off again! The pay for rides around the park (like horse, rocket, digger etc) are only 10p a go which is good value. We enjoyed playing mini golf and spending time in the parks during the evening. My daughter loved pressing all the buttons on the stations leading up to and including the gnome area. The grounds are lovely and an enjoyable but hilly walk. The ice-creams we found good value compared to other places we visited whilst there. The swimming pool was a reasonable temperature, my children wore wetsuits and they never complained about it being cold. Overall another enjoyable stay which my children really enjoyed and i'm sure we will be back in the future.

Was not too sure what to expect when I booked the apartment in the castle. The castle is fascinating in that it is a Victorian folly. Bassett (Liquorice Allsorts fame) had it built for his wife. It is worth reading the history of the building. What is superb is the fantastic view - we stayed in the Harbour accommodation - and as the name indicates we overlooked the harbour. The accommodation was spacious and clean. It had all we needed for our stay, so a good range of equipment, plates, etc., in the kitchen. The lounge was comfy. The bed linen was lovely as were the beds. The bathroom was basic and the shower okay. We had our own parking space which was nice. The staff were helpful. There is a small indoor swimming pool which I used most days. The accommodation is annexed next to the Watermouth theme park. The downstairs bit of the castle housed a museum fall of lots of different curios, as well as the traditional things you would see in an old place. The owners have spent time collating a vast range of old mechanical things , such as one armed bandits and other primitive slot machines. The theme park is very much based on this with small children's rides which reflect a more bygone period. All in all a very pleasant experience. We had the most amazing weather so this helped to make the stay that more special.

The website suggested two bathrooms and a welcome pack but there was only one bathroom and no welcome pack. There was plenty of crockery and pots and pans but one or two more basic consumables would have been nice. The apartment was spacious and well maintained. The castle was nicely located midway between Ilfracombe and Combe Martin. Having access the theme park when it was closed to the public was brilliant. Obviously the rides were closed but the gardens were spectacular and very peaceful. And Watermouth Harbour, the Boat Cafe and the coastal path were a five minute walk away. We had a great time and will definitely consider another visit.
