Heron Cottage is part of the 15th century flour mill in the quiet village of Little Salkeld near Penrith in Cumbria and appears in Muncaster Manuscripts circa July 1452 as a gift of the Manor & Mill of little Salkeld to the family of the present owner. Carefully renovated with exposed beams and modern open plan living you will enjoy your stay looking out onto the beck with the water running past. The garden has seating provided so you can relax and make the most out of the tranquil surroundings on offer. Still a fully functioning flour mill you will be able to watch as the owners utilise the neighbouring water to power the twin wheels they need to create their high end local flour.
You will be spoilt for choice locally, be sure to visit Lacy’s Caves, five chambers carved out of the sandstone cliff with views of the river. Just a short walk from the village you will find Long Meg and her daughters, a stone circle from the bronze age and one of the finest in the north of England. Other local activities include, Hunsonby outdoor swimming pool open from April- September. There is also a family run equestrian centre just up the road, catering for all levels offering an abundance of activities.
Heron Cottage can be booked with The Old Tearoom (UK32945) to accommodate 8 guests.

No outside lighting. Only outside light available was a sensor light which stayed on a few minutes on the garden area. This meant unable to sit out on an evening plus walking to and from car was pitch black without a torch. 1 tiny torch was provided. Property sold as a 4 person property only 2 sun loungers really needs to have 4. Picnic bench available, not suitable for relaxing. Grass had been cut but not raked, looked messy and also grass was walked through property. Cleanliness throughout property was poor, loads cobwebs especially when entering property. Wiped dining table and the cloth used was filthy afterwards. Had to clean frying pan before use as stale crusty food still on pan. Moved bed in 2nd bedroom and there was a vicks nasel inhaler under bed so clearly hoovering was just around beds and not underneath. Bathroom was located in lounge area. Wierd! Shower cubicle too small. Towels and bathrobes provided shabby and worn out. No filter in dishwasher. Bathroom plug got stuck on 1st use. Overall layout of property just felt wrong and the 2nd bedroom was located at the top of the stairs and would be unsuitable for children even though it had 2 single beds. Stair gate was broken. No drying facilities for wet clothes. No heating controls accessible to alter radiators, asked owners where these were and was told to dry clothes on sunloungers even though it was raining. A question mark was put on the end of the reply which was unnecessary. I could go on and on. We have friends and family in the Lakes and try to visit 4 times a year, we have stayed in many properties and this was by far the worst and definitely would not recommend.

Heron cottage is a beautiful old characterful place in a stunning location. The views and garden with hot tub are the highlights. The apartment itself is spacious yet has a cosy welcoming feeling, two great size bedrooms and very well equipped kitchen. Towel, bath robes and linens all exceptional quality and immaculate. Lovely area for walks and neighbouring Langwathby is worth a visit - great pub for food, well stocked village shop, pop ups on the village green - so welcoming (just over a 1 mile away) Unfortunately we wont return due to noise. Heron apartment is above a ground floor one and there is no sound proofing. Yes it's an old building but you can literally hear the neighbours conversation, dishwasher, tv. Our neighbours were lovely, it wasn't that they were noisy per say - its the conversion design, Heron cottage bedroom is above the neighbours lounge / kitchen and vice versa - it needs at least some sound proofing. The two apartments have only both been available since Nov 2021, so its possible this is the first time both have been let at the same time and therefore been an issue. Also the main stairway is within the twin bedroom. There is a strong sturdy banister and lockable gate at the top of the stairs but no dividing wall. This wasn't an issue for us but it could be for those with younger children, so I'd like to see this mentioned on the accommodation description please - as they have done so well and clearly with the stream in the garden - so guests can make a considered judgement for themselves. Cleanliness was ok - kitchen, lounge area and main bedroom immaculate. But dirty tissue under the twin bed and cobwebs on most windows and stair well. Yes it's an old building so expect the odd one, but with later check-ins due to extensive cleaning this was a shame.
