This 16th century thatched cottage offers a wealth of activities locally, including cycling, horseriding and walking.

Virginia Cottage is a pretty, listed, thatched cottage set in the heart of the village of Lapford. With its origins dating from the 16th-century, the cottage boasts many of the features you would expect from a cottage of this age including beams and an inglenook fireplace. The well-appointed and presented accommodation makes the cottage an ideal holiday base from which to explore all the delights Devon has to offer. The cathedral city of Exeter on the River Exe is 15 miles. Head towards Barnstaple and you have access to some of the best beaches in the country including Woolacombe and Saunton. The nearest beach at Instow is ideal for children or just a great place to walk off life’s stresses and then enjoy a meal or drink at one of the pubs and restaurants along the front. The town of Barnstaple has most amenities you may require as well as a busy high street, and the market and Butchers Row are well worth a visit. There are numerous places of interest close by. At Great Torrington you will find the RHS gardens at Rosemoor and Dartington Crystal. Further afield discover the historic fishing village of Clovelly and the Victorian towns of Lynton and Lynmouth. National Trust properties can be found at Arlington, Castle Drogo and Knightshayes Court. For younger ones, visits to the Big Sheep or Milky Way theme parks are recommended. There is walking on Dartmoor, Exmoor and the South West Coast Path or hire a bike and cycle the Tarka Trail. Lapford Lodge Boarding Kennels is just 2 miles away. Garage ½ mile. Shop ½ mile, pub 200 yards.

We stay in holiday cottages twice a year every year - negatives: No Handwash, no towels, no clocks in rooms, hot water was not hot - luke warm but welcoming because of the hot weather, had to boil kettle for washing up and bath, but lovely place. We left on Friday due to my husband's work commitments, but a lovely cottage and lovely neighbours.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner; With regards to the hot water, we’ve had the boiler checked and all is working well. The water and heating temperatures need to be adjusted on the boiler which is situated in the kitchen. Maybe the previous guest had turned the temperature down. All this information is in the folder in the kitchen including our contact details if there is a problem. We leave a hand towel in the bathroom but advise guests to bring their own. We do leave bars of soap and there are clock radios in the kitchen and main bedroom. The two TVs and oven also give the time.

The kitchen was a lovely size with beautiful views and a lovely garden for my dogs. Sadly it was not very clean. There was one toilet roll for two people for a week and no soap. Necessities that really should be provided bearing in mind the cost of over £900 for a week. Also, although it was stated when booking towels were not provided, for the price, I think towels should be provided as they are bulky to pack. Something of serious concern to me was when I took my dogs on one of the walks recommended, there as a man standing by the gate with a shot gun and what looked like a bag of dead animals. This was an official Devon CC walking track. I feared for my dogs as I did not want them to be mistaken for rabbits or whatever else people like to kill so kept away from the area. I was surprised people can take shot guns wherever they like.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the Owner; Sorry to hear there was a complaint regarding cleanliness of the cottage. Please read comments from our housekeeper below. I always make sure that there is a toilet roll on the holder and a spare in the cupboard. There is always a bar of soap in the bathroom as well as a hand towel. There is a hand towel and two tea towels in the kitchen. There is also washing up liquid, dishwasher tablets, cleaning cloth and scourer. I always leave the cottage spotless so am a little upset that someone thinks that it is not.

Virginia Cottage was an ideal place for us to stay with our two dogs. The house is really well equipped; we had everythig we needed. We felt really comfortable in the house, it's a beautiful old house. It has a well fenced garden which was good for our dogs. From the terrace you have a beautiful view in the landscape of Devon. And there is a nice dogwalk for about 20 to 30 minutes across the meadows on a public footpath with a beatiful wide view, wonderful for the morning and evening dogwalk. From Virginia Cottage you can drive to the Exmoor, to the Dartmoor and to the West Coast, so you have many things to do and to visit. Perhaps one disadvantage is that you have to use the car nearly everyday except you have a relaxing day staying at the house (which is a good decision).

We had a very enjoyable week at Virginia Cottage. The weather was kind and there are lots of things to do in the surrounding areas. The local pub, a few mins walk, is an absolute gem. Unfortunately though, the cottage is very tired and in need of some serious TLC. On arrival and overall the spaces are clean and tidy but sadly not up to what we expect from a 4 star. There are many positives and many negatives for this property but would question the rating system before we book another 4 star. To finish on a positive - Lapford is a perfect Devon village to stay in, lots of very friendly locals and a smashing pub. The property is very dog friendly!

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the Owner; Thank you for your positive comments. Virginia Cottage is a 600 year old thatched cottage and as such is quite unique and we endeavour to reflect this in its décor.
