The picturesque village of Beddgelert is a terrific spot for some peaceful relaxation. The stone-built village is also the perfect base for exploring the Snowdonia National Park with picturesque walks through Aberglaslyn Pass to the south, Nant Gwynant to the east and Snowdon to the north. For those wanting a challenge, you can also walk to the summit of Snowdon via nearby Rhyd Dbu which is connected by a walking/cycling path.
Beddgelert is a historical village steeped in folk lore. Take a walk along the banks of Glaslyn to visit the legendary resting place of ‘Gelert’, the faithful hound of the medieval Welsh Prince Llewelyn the Great. You could also visit Dinas Emrys where a castle once stood on the rocky wooded Hillock. Legend has it that this castle was the site of the famous exchange between warlord Vortigern and a young Merlin.
Enjoy a day out for all ages at Sygun copper mine just down the road. It offers underground exploring and above ground adventure in the heart of Snowdonia National Park. The area is considered the adventure capital of Europe and there is an abundance of opportunities to be had. Why not try inland surfing at Surf Snowdonia, the world’s fastest zip line at Zip World Velocity or Bear Gryll’s RIB ride on the Menai Straits, all within a 30-40 minute drive from the village! You can also ride a steam train on the Welsh Highland Railway to Caernarfon and nearby Porthmadog. The UK’s longest heritage railway running 25 miles from beneath the castle walls at Caernarfon.
This is a fine central location for enjoying both the mountains and the sea as the coast at Porthmadog is only 7 miles down the valley to the golden sandy beaches at Black Rock Sands. Betws y Coed, Swallow Falls and Conwy valley are also 15 miles away. Beach 9¾ miles. Pub and restaurant 150 yards.
