This wonderful, peaceful rural retreat is situated on the flank of Pendle Hill in the Ribble Valley and has spectacular views.

For the perfect peaceful, relaxing holiday, with access to some excellent walks and cycle rides right from the gate, Throstle Hall Cottage is an ideal base for exploring the Ribble Valley and Yorkshire Dales, and, of course, Pendle Hill and the surrounding countryside. There are few properties in this area with such a superb outlook over the Ribble Valley and Yorkshire Dales. This detached cottage is located in farmland at Brownlow Farm in Twiston, just 1½ miles from the village of Barley, and just a bit further to the delightful village of Downham, where time has stood still. From the cottage, you can see the magnificent peaks of Pen-Y-Ghent, Ingleborough and Whernside, as well as the Trough and Forest of Bowland.
Lovingly renovated into a four bedroom holiday home, this ’upside down’ house offers some surprises! The cottage is accessed via a steep private unmade farm track. Gates must be closed and care is required on approach and departure. It has a terraced garden and a paved patio area for enjoying the peace and tranquillity of the surroundings. No traffic noises or street lights here! The property further benefits from access to 15 acres of private farmland, where the owners have brought the fields back into productivity and planted over 4500 hedgerow and 400 trees to encourage wildlife and birds. The town of Clitheroe is just 5 miles away, dominated by its castle perched high above the town, and is rich in independent shops, eateries, bars and a popular brewery. Supermarkets can be found at Clitheroe and Barrowford. Beach 30 miles. Shops 3 miles, pub and restaurant 2 miles.

Lovely place. We spent Christmas their had all the family 8 adults, and 3 dogs, we had a lovely time, place is a bit isolated but that is what we liked about it.

No wow factor. Views cannot be easily seen from the sitting and dining area, windows very small. But maybe due to planning permission? Total layout was wrong. Spent most time up and down stairs. 2 bathrooms on ground floor and yet on remaining 2 floors no wc. Had problems with the water system which meant that for 2 days had plumbers in the property. A no go place for anyone with mobility problems, even minor. Also there's a public footpath at the side of the property so if you're really wanting somewhere isolated and away from civilisation then it's really not the place. If you book this cottage then it's worth checking before you go that the water is working as it should as very unsympathetic owner!

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner; We were disappointed to read your review of Throstle Hall Cottage. The property description clearly states it is an ‘upside down’ Cottage and the location of the bathrooms, bedrooms etc. The Cottage has a glass atrium - floor to ceiling windows, not sure what better views a place can have. It is a traditional Cottage, therefore stone recessed windows (to minimise cold in olden days) are the norm. In order to rectify something, we need to know there is a problem... The caretaker received an e-mail at 5pm on the Sunday (whom you were aware had gone on holiday herself) and unfortunately; no contact was made with the Agency, who could have contacted me. As soon as we were aware, we had plumbers on site within the hour. We had to order a part, which took two days to arrive, and was fixed as soon as humanly possible - the problem was a lack of pressure. Our first and only consideration is the comfort of our guests and we have always done our utmost to ensure that these are holidays to remember. You only have to look at previous reviews to see this is always the case.

Enjoyed our stay and the children liked the upside down house. However, we had problem with no cold water on the first night, which was resolved and possibly because of power cut at the bore hole. The drive was steeper than advertised/expected, especially the final bit. We knew the centre section was unsurfaced but it had some very deep ruts in it. There were also 2 gates to open & shut. This needs to be more clearly advertised. It was a long way from the upstairs bedroom to the bathrooms and could have done with a toilet on first floor (in area of utility room??) as bad on the knees for some. The property was roomy, well equipped and the key holder very helpful. Day we could have sat outside it rained but that wasn't the cottage's fault!! The view was beautiful and The Pendle Inn in Barley good for evening meal.

This is a little gem of a holiday home. About as private as you could get, with great pubs and walks on the doorstep. Could easily walk to Pendle Hill, Barley and other villages from the doorstep. House is lovely with comfy beds and big open plan kitchen/dining/lounge. 8 adults stayed there and didn't feel crowded. Angie the keyholder is lovely and very forthcoming with advice. Will be back. Highlight: The views from the dining room and staircases. Amazing

Excellent cottage ideal to get away from it all but near to local amenities. One thing though, access is definitely an issue. This should be highlighted BEFORE you book the cottage and a proper photo of the access on the website.

We had a lovely time. The cottage was well furnished and comfortable and the views were amazing. It's well off the beaten track- we very nearly got snowed in!
