Thornby is a lovely bungalow in a superb location, with lovely sea views and the passing steam trains from the conservatory and bedrooms,it has a nice back garden with views and good parking at the front, it is very spacious with good furniture, the only thing that would improve it would be a fridge/freezer in the kitchen, otherwise everything is ok.

This lovely, big bungalow in it's picturesque location would have scored much higher if it had been cleaned properly before our arrival! Spiders and cobwebs everywhere in all rooms and the bathroom floor and small cloakroom were noticeably grimy. Beds were comfy and clean. Sofa's need replacing as they let the place down. (made the mistake of pulling them out to get at the spiders and discovered lots of dead insects and even a broken biscuit!). Also the TV is much too small for the size of the room! This could have been a lovely place if a bit of TLC had been spent on it and a bit more invested in it. The garden was lovely and was obviously cared for more than the house. We have stayed in many cottages with the same rating as this and they would all put this to shame. A welcome pack is quite usual on arrival or even a pint of milk would be nice! We took this as a late booking so the value for money was almost fair but would have complained on arrival if we had paid full high season price.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner; We are very sorry that the guests were not happy with the cleanliness of the property. We are going down this weekend and will do an end of season deep clean. We will also discuss the comments with our caretakers. While there is no excuse for cobwebs I would like to point out that in the countryside the spiders are at their most numerous in the autumn! We do hope to replace the sofas this low season. I can understand that guests feel that they have paid a lot of money, but 40% of this goes to Cottages.com. Last year we had gas central heating installed and a new bedroom carpet. The TV is a 32 inch in a room that is 12 by 14 ft, so we do not feel this is excessively small and will give the sofas priority.

The bungalow was lovely but there were several minor things that we feel should be addressed. One of the lights in the bathroom did not work. There was a 'glut' of wood lice mostly in the conservatory but also in the house. There were lots of them. The toaster sparked when we used it and sometimes took several attempts to get it to work. We could not find a broom to sweep the kitchen and conservatory floors. The oven gloves were not suitable for use - one set was very thin and the other had been used and was covered in fat so not useable. The key safe was virtually impossible to get into - it was in a rather awkward place by the conservatory door in the garden. It took me ten minutes to open it and at the end of the holiday, just as long to close it! The entrance to the drive to the bungalow was difficult to see and a sign indicating that this was Thornby would have been useful at the entrance. To get out of the drive, I had to stand in the road and wait until the road was clear before letting my husband drive the car out. The car drivers - obviously locals - would speed by and therefore it was quite dangerous. A mirror on the opposite side of the road might help! It was a pity that there was not a freezer - it would have been useful and saved a few trips to Minehead. We did leave a note of the above problems for the caretakers so they should know of the difficulties by now. However, they did not check to see if everything was alright which we thought was strange.

The perfect location for us but sadly not the perfect cottage. - the bathroom was dirty - there were cobwebs in every room - the DVD player was so noisy it was difficult to watch a film - the curtains in the twin room were very thin making it difficult for the children to get to sleep, we rigged up 'black out curtains' with our spare towels and blankets - the sofas were past their best and not comfortable to sit on All in all we did not think the property was worthy of its 4 star rating. We would definitely return to the area, but not to Thornby.

We really enjoyed our time at Blue Anchor Bay. I used to holiday there as a child 50 years ago and this lovely village hasn't changed at all. The vintage railway at the bottom of the lovely garden was a delight and the view inland and to the sea were great. Conservatory meant we could enjoy the views even when the weather wasn't so good! The cottage was well equipped with a large new kitchen. Don't forget to take your own towels.

Lovely place, ideal for station shame the beach was not suitable for children as all stones with warnings about mud & rock falls.

nice cottage overall but the beach at this location was terrible. only a little shop there for supplies but was okay location to travel about. the main problem in the cottage for me was the small shower with a step up and no safety rail to hold onto to it. good thing was all on one level
