Description

Whether looking for a relaxing retreat, family attractions or outdoor activities, The Waterside is a fantastic holiday cottage.

The perfect holiday choice in an idyllic position on the banks of the River Torridge overlooking the Taw and Torridge estuaries, with far reaching views across to Instow and beyond, this semi-detached cottage is ideal for a family seaside holiday or a relaxing escape at any time of year. The Waterside offers a unique opportunity to holiday in a truly enviable position at a stunning cottage. The large living area on the first floor is the heart of the house with bi-folding doors onto a sunny decked area, a fantastic spot to soak up the sun or enjoy a lazy breakfast whilst taking in the sights of the passing boats. Just a short level walk from the centre of Appledore, one of the oldest and prettiest villages in North Devon, with its cobbled streets and a vast array of popular village pubs, restaurants, cafés, shops and the bustling quayside, there really is something to please everyone. Instow is on the opposite side of the estuary with its sandy beach, bars and restaurants, and the wide golden sandy beach of Westward Ho!, popular with surfers, is just 2 miles. Bideford, Exmoor, Clovelly and Hartland Quay are all close by, and the area is a must for water sports, sailing enthusiasts and fishermen, whilst walkers and cyclists will enjoy the famous Tarka Trail which passes close by. The young and old will enjoy crabbing off the quay, and golf and riding is available locally. For family fun, The Big Sheep and The Milky Way adventure parks are close by and don’t miss the annual Appledore Book Festival. Free mooring is available outside. Beach 1 mile. Shop, pub and restaurant 500 yards.

Absolutely amazing views from the balcony. Well equipped and comfy home from home. We did think the house was a bit tired in places and areas of redecoration are needed. The bit that really disappointed us was the level of cleanliness. I'm no clean freak but this wasn't at the standard I would expect. Skirting boards dirty throughout and sinks had dirt engrained around the edge of the rim. Splash backs in kitchen etc... had food splashes on them.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner. We were so disappointed to read your comments and have taken them on board as we want you to love The Waterside as much as we do. Our cleaners have been notified and rectified the areas immediately. They have had a couple of instances where guests have arrived too early and so a final inspection was unable to have taken place! Due to continuous bookings throughout the summer period there can be wear and tear to the property. As we have a popular property it is therefore difficult in between bookings to repaint. This is done at the end of the peak season and again in the spring before the next busy period. The necessary areas will now be given a fresh lick of paint ready for the winter bookings.

The house was ok, but a little expensive for what you get. The lack of parking is a pain which we knew about during booking. The owners kindly offered to cover parking costs during the busy time we were there, but its a aggravation of it all with children and grand parents in tow as we had 3 cars to deal with exacerbating the issue. The kitchen has very little work space which is an issue when cooking for 8. The dining table is a bit cramped for 8 (plus food). The weather wasn't too kind so we couldn't use the table on the balcony (which was a decent size). The layout is a bit ill thought through down stairs, but I guess its due to the fact it was 2 cottages before. The towels on arrival smelt a little damp, and there are a few cobwebs in the hall so that hadn't been cleaned for a long while. Appledore itself was nice, and easier to get to. The view over the estuary is also pleasant. Access to north devon was also very good. The owners left a bottle of wine and biscuits so that was a nice touch, but unfortunately we wouldn't want to go back to waterside and stay again. I am not being snobby but when you pay that sort of money for a week it needs to be better than your home and its fell significantly short.

Lovely house with great view from adult bedrooms and upstairs open plan worked perfectly for the three generations in our party. My only criticism is the cleaning wasn't so great, when we opened the shutters down stairs the dirt behind has been there along time, also the skirting boards needed a wipe. All in all a fantastic place.

A relatively late booking, the house was much bigger than we needed but we were happy to pay the premium for such a great location, wonderful views and generous outdoor space, and the property fulfilled on all of these points. The great weather allowed us to use the deck area to the max - it caught the sun until around 6pm the week that we visited - and we loved the views over to Instow. The only downside for us was the quality/cleanliness of some of the kitchen equipment - the house itself is very comfortable, spacious and well laid out, and Appledore is lovely.
