Converted from a former barn and one of a pair, ideal for discovering Hadrian’s Wall or visiting the Scottish Borders.

This delightful pair of semi-detached holiday cottages have been converted from a former barn and are situated in a quiet, rural location in the beautiful, unspoilt South Tyne Valley on the Cumbrian/Northumbrian border, only 12 miles from Haltwhistle. The cottages are just 6 miles from the heritage site of Hadrians Wall, which has many areas to explore including the fort at Birdoswald and the fascinating archaeological site of Vindolanda, with its Roman history museum. Standing within a small cluster of homes, the properties are in the North Pennine Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and surrounded by beautiful landscapes. The many footpaths and groomed cycle ways allow guests the freedom to explore the stone-walled fields and surrounding moorland. The location is perfectly situated as a touring base for exploring a wealth of natural and historical treasures in the area. The Scottish border and the Lake District are 25 miles away. Nearby Alston, 6 miles, the highest market town in England, offers an interesting array of shops, cafes, pubs and galleries. There is also a steam engine railway, plus an 18-hole golf course. Shop 6 miles, pub and restaurant 2 miles.

Great place! We loved it. Really roomy kitchen and lounge, fantastic views from the cottage, and great walks (including the Pennine Way) straight from the front door. We enjoyed the chance to switch off (although WiFi was incoming the day we left!) and it was great getting back from outings (Hadrian's Wall a 20min drive) to such a nice place to relax! TV equipped with DVD player and USB port (though it didn't see much use!). Washing machine and dryer both worked fine and saw some use. Detergent was provided! Kitchen is easily well-enough equipped with enough plates/bowls/mugs/cutlery/pans/wine and pint glasses - maybe bringing one more tea towel would be ideal to save using the same one for hands and drying the stuff not put in the dishwasher! Local pub was really friendly, about a 15min walk cross-country. Supermarkets in Alston (5-10min drive) and a larger one in Haltwhistle (15mins), but having to nip out in the car was worth it for the great rural location. Joanne the owner was lovely and very invested in us having a good time! Didn't mind us being a group of students, ordering a big online shop, or doing a barbecue on the patio (best to bring a disposable one - although Joanne very kindly lent us her own proper one to save us going out to get one!). Only very minor criticism is there being no OS map in the cottage so best to pick one up yourself - apart from that, no complaints at all and would stop again in a heartbeat!

The cottage was perfect for our stay. It was in such a beautiful and peaceful spot and we loved having the cows in the field next to us. Everything was clean and the beds were comfortable. The range of DVDs available to watch was outstanding, if only we had enough time to watch them. There was too much to do in the area!
