English Country Cottages

An inspiring collection of properties chosen for their character, luxury and heritage, all graded 4 star and above.

Set in a classically Kentish village ideally placed for day trips and with games facilities to keep you entertained on those rainy days.

Thoughtfully converted to a high standard, this stunning, thatched 17th-century barn has a plethora of beams and vaulted entrance hall. Standing detached, it is ideally situated on the edge of the picturesque village of Smarden - whose name is derived from the Saxon ‘Smeredaenne’, meaning butter valley and pasture. The holiday property has an additional family room and an open-tread oak staircase which leads to a galleried mezzanine floor, where games facilities can be found.
Smarden was once a village thriving on the wool industry, and is now a sleepy backwater of old England, so classically Kentish that it is sometimes in film sets. In the heart of the village is a cluster of half-timbered houses with Kent peg tiled roofs. Golf can be found locally as well as fishing by arrangement.
For day trips, Sissinghurst Castle Gardens are well worth a visit, as are the vineyards at Biddenden. Leeds Castle is easily accessible and it closely resembles a fairytale palace, rather than a fortress. The fine aviary and maze are also sure to keep children interested and amused. There is easy access to Ashford, from where the Eurotunnel can be taken to enjoy lunch or dinner in either Paris or Brussels. One of England’s most venerable cities, Canterbury has much to offer, with many shops, restaurants and theatres. A former church, now called The Canterbury Tales has guided tours which lead through galleries and recount Chaucer’s tales. Shops and pub 1 mile.

Booked on behalf of 4 colleagues working in the area. They didn't really have the time to sample the local amenities.

Great place. 8 stayed at Christmas. Meet and greet with keys and intro to the barn. And provided assistance. Lovely and warm. Photos do not do it justice, it's stunning. Lots of sofas so everyone could relax. Huge dining table. Good internet throughout house. Beautiful area with friendly locals. Lots of walks to go on. 3 local pubs all were unique and served a good variety of ales. Local shops a 5 min drive that had basics and butchers. Farm shop near also. (Recommend supermarket stop on way) Rooms and bathrooms all good.
