English Country Cottages

An inspiring collection of properties chosen for their character, luxury and heritage, all graded 4 star and above.

A perfect location right in the heart of Bampton in west Oxfordshire where families and groups can get together and explore the area.

The Stores is a Grade II listed terraced property, situated in the heart of Bampton. It served the villagers for over 200 years, and has now been professionally renovated to a very high standard creating a luxurious holiday cottage. From early in the 19th century until the turn of the 20th century, it was Holloway’s Printers, locally known as the Bampton Stamp Office. In the 20th century, it became a village shop selling groceries, sweets and tobacco, and in later years, pet supplies. It was looked after by a succession of shopkeepers until its closure in 2010.
Located on the edge of the market square, you are a stone’s throw from the village amenities including four pubs, cafe´, restaurant, convenience store, art gallery, library, post office, butchers and pharmacy. Bampton is in the west Oxfordshire area of the Thames Valley, and was the filming location for the village scenes in the popular television series ‘Downton Abbey’.
This is a perfect cottage for families and groups to get together, enjoy the property and explore the surrounding area which includes beautiful open countryside, quintessential English villages and a host of award-winning restaurants.
You can still see many traditions in the village including morris dancing (it boasts three teams), The Great Original Shirt Race, May garland making and a flower festival, all of which take place on the Spring Bank Holiday weekend. The towns and villages of the Cotswolds including Bourton-on-the-Water, Stow-on-the-Wold, Burford and Chipping Norton, are within easy reach from Bampton. You can indulge yourself in a traditional afternoon tea in one of many tea rooms within half an hour’s drive or enjoy hiking for hours in unspoilt countryside.
If you would like a larger range of shops, take a 5-mile trip to nearby Witney, or travel further afield to either Bicester village with its 130 designer shops, or the shopping outlet centre in Swindon. The county’s capital, the university city of Oxford, is 18 miles away, where you can discover many historic buildings, go punting on the river, or eat and shop in the many independent and high street cafés, restaurants and shops.
For nature lovers, the Chimney Meadow Nature Reserve is just over 2 miles away where you will discover many different species of birds. Golf 5 miles. Shops, pubs and restaurants 100 yards.

Amazing cottage, had everything we needed and very clean and well laid out. Very cosy and very very thoughtful with everything. Area a little boring but had all the local amenities like a co op and a take away and a pub. About half an hour drive from oxford centre.

A wonderful Christmas week spent with family. The cottage owner was very helpful and obliging. All amenities are within walking distance or a short car ride away. The only slight negative is the lack of private parking spaces outside the property, although the village square opposite does offer free of charge facilities. I would thoroughly recommend this property and would love to stay again in the future.

It was really clean. You do need a car hence the lower rating on location. 15 miles to park and ride for Oxford which is super easy. 15 to Blenheim which is incredible. Chinese takeaway 2 doors down is fab and coop open til 10pm across the road. Couple of pubs. We had a family get together and it was brilliant we might even go there again as so good. Thanks for having us
