English Country Cottages

An inspiring collection of properties chosen for their character, luxury and heritage, all graded 4 star and above.

Nestled in a pretty village, this detached property is a great base from which to explore York, Harrogate and Ripon.

Nestling in the heart of the quintessential English village of Aldborough, these former stables, adjacent to the owner’s home, have been carefully converted to retain many original features. This detached, single-storey property has a stone flagged, open-plan living area, with exposed roof trusses, and overlooks the garden and Studforth Hill, the site of an ancient Roman amphitheatre. The picturesque village of Aldborough is steeped in history, with parts of the Roman defences, two spectacular mosaic pavements, pottery, ornaments and coins all on display at the English Heritage Museum, which is around the corner from the cottage. Standing close to the village hall is the battle cross commemorating the Battle of Boroughbridge, and a plaque on the village green commemorates the RAF crew who lost their lives but avoided crashing into the village. The stocks in front of this plaque were removed from the square in Boroughbridge, when the medieval church there was demolished in 1851.The red and blue striped maypole, formerly a ship’s mast, is permanently situated on the green ready for the annual Mayday fête. There is a friendly village pub serving traditional meals, and dogs are welcome.
A variety of inns, restaurants and shops can be found in the neighbouring town of Boroughbridge, and just 5 minutes away is a local farm shop, which sells Yorkshire produce, and has a café serving home baking and a children’s play area. The cottage provides a luxury base from which to explore the surrounding area. Visit Fountains Abbey, Studley Royal Water Garden, Beningborough Hall and Castle Howard. Explore the market towns at Ripon and Knaresborough, the elegant spa town of Harrogate and the vibrant, ancient, walled city of York, with its abundance of world-renowned attractions. Family fun can be found at Brimham Rocks and Lightwater Valley, and the Yorkshire Dales, the North Yorkshire Moors and the coastal towns of Scarborough and Whitby are all easily accessible. Shop ½ mile, pub and restaurant 500 yards.

We stayed here for a week with our baby girl and 2 small dogs. The owners could not be more accommodating and offered friendly advise on local amenities and attractions to visit. The cottage was finished to such a high standard and was one of the best equipped we have ever stayed in. A truly amazing place to stay!!!

We had a fantastic stay at The Stables. Morag and Jeremy were so friendly and helpful making our stay a really enjoyable experience. The cottage is well equipped and extremely comfortable with lovely views across the field full of cows. A real treat to wake up to everyday. The kids enjoyed the lovely garden and surroundings too and the ping pong table was a real hit. We would definitely come back here again.

A great break, back with the people and places we loved for 15 years. We did learn that at nearly 70, showers in baths aren't such a good idea and we'd have liked a non-slip mat, just in case . The dog's tie-down screw-in earth anchors were v hard going in the ground which I suspect is stone farmyard under a thin grass covering. We made do by clipping them around the bottom of two of the roof support beams but a couple of well separated wall rings would have been easier to use.
