The comfortable living room boasts an original stone floor and a gas wood burner-style fire that heats up quickly and gives character and warmth to the room. There is also a small courtyard to the rear of the property which looks out on to the beck and borders the Raby Castle estate. Perfect for walkers, Staindrop is the ideal base from which to explore the many and varied faces of the county, starting with the network of public footpaths that run in and around the village. A tea room, shop, local family butcher, pub and post office serve the everyday needs of residents and visitors alike. Only five miles away is the thriving market town of Barnard Castle which offers a weekly market and more local pubs, shops and restaurants to enjoy. The cathedral city of Durham is a mere 30-minute drive away and is perfect for a romantic boat ride along the River Wear, a meal out in one of the many bistros and restaurants, some boutique shopping or the opportunity to visit the famous cathedral and Durham Castle, both of which are steeped in history and tradition. Beamish, the living museum of the north, is a must-see attraction for all visitors to the area while the Metrocentre and Newcastle upon Tyne can be reached in just over an hour’s drive. For guests wanting to explore even more of what the northern counties have to offer, Cumbria (and the Lake District), the Yorkshire Dales, the North Pennines and Northumberland are all within a 2-hour drive away. A wonderful place to stay, very comfortable, full of everything you could possibly need for a break away. Ideally situated for touring Durham Dales, North Pennine hills and further afield. Quiet and set by a quaint beck, we had a great time and were spoilt for choice for walks and attractions nearby. Lots of information provided by the owner in advance which was a novelty for us and very clean with a few goodies in the fridge to welcome us. Would definitely return as a base for future holidays.

Great location with everything you could possibly need. As a mature couple we did find the bed to be too firm for us but of course it's impossible to meet everyone's taste. The welcome pack was gratefully accepted.

The snuggery was the perfect retreat from which to explore Durham and all other historical sites of interest. The cottage was very comfortable and private in a very pretty village surround. Perfect location as a start point to explore Durham and other local areas. Would highly recommend this for a couple.
