The Shillies is the perfect seaside setting with amazing views of the Irish Sea, and on a clear day you can catch sight of the Isle of Man. Sit back and hear the rolling sounds of the Irish Sea whilst enjoying the outstanding sunset sipping your favourite tipple. The Shillies is a detached bungalow that has been a family home for over 40 years, seeing generations enjoying the calm and ultimate peace and quiet that this area has to offer. The Shillies has also undergone total renovation. Coulderton is a coastal village situated in Cumbria and is located just to the south west of Egremont and just on the outskirts of St Bees. The beauty of this area is that it is so close to the Lakes. Take a trip on the Ravenglass to Eskdale miniature steam railway, known to the locals as the ’la ’al ratty’, or visit beautiful Muncaster Castle, home to the World Owl Centre. One of the main attractions of this area are the exceptional starry nights, which is due to no light pollution. Whitehaven is only a few miles away and is filled with popular restaurants and a world-famous port. You can visit the Beacon Museum here, which is bursting with history. Coast2Coast cycle routes, coastal walks and golf at St Bees and Seascale are all within easy reach and a single track railway runs along the back of the property. Whether you are looking for a relaxing seaside break or an adventurous walking holiday, then The Shillies is the perfect base for you. Beach 20 yards. Shop 3 miles, pub and restaurant 2 miles.

This is the second time we have been to the Shillies and this time we had a 2 year old and Grandma with us aswell as our dog. The cottage was absolutely spotless. It's so important with a little one who picks up bugs easily. The shed at the back was full of everything we needed for our little girl and games inside too for the cold and wet days. It was also luxury for the adults and our dog was safe and secure in the enclosed garden. The location isn't ideal for everyone as you need to drive out to the shops, but we know the area well and love being in the peace and quiet and especially being right on Caulderton beach and so close to St Bees. The neighbours are lovely and we were also fortunate to meet family of the owners of the cottage who were able to give us the history connected to the cottage and the area. It really is a very special place and we have some wonderful memories of our holiday. Thank you:)

The cottage was lovely but really not suitable for older people. The drive down to the cottage left a lot to be desired. It was very well equipped but the wooden floors were more than a challenge for our greyhound with his long legs.

Response on behalf of the Owner; Thank you Pauline for your lovely comments in our guest book. Whether somewhere is suitable or not seems to depend on the individual as we have had several guests like yourself in their 80’s and our very first guests were in fact in their 90’s. We have recently had a blind lady stay for 2 weeks and in the past several guests have been wheelchair reliant and one lady who depends on oxygen tanks 24/7 has booked twice for 2-week stays. The road is unadopted but in good and safe condition and is, we believe, a small price to pay for keeping Coulderton Beach’s secret safe but may seem unusual to the uninitiated. Please let me reassure our future visitors that the road, although unadopted, is happily traversed, all year round, in the light and the dark, by our residents and visitors alike, irrespective of the car they are driving. It has recently had the surface reskimmed. As we discussed, Gemma, our greyhound who we lost in January, had no trouble with the wooden floor, but we appreciate that all dogs are different. We felt that a wooden floor was the best all round choice for guests and the easiest to keep clean and hygienic.

Beautiful cottage with all mod cons. The photos don't do it justice! Fabulous views. Friendly neighbours. We all had a lovely holiday even the hard-to-please teenagers loved it!

We had a lovely time at The Shillies and found everything there that we could wish for, the owners were very attentive and said to contact them if there were any issues or if we would like information. The Bungalow is compact but it is part of the charm and heats up quickly, the log fire is an absolute home comfort and there were plenty of seasoned logs and kinderlin. There were plenty of excursions to go on at Whitehaven and Muncaster Castle was a lovely day out. The shops are within easy reach of The Shillies and there is a lovely beach to the right of there as it has large pebbles in front of it but our dog didn't mind the short walk for a long run. ST.Bees is only a short drive aprox 2.5 Miles and has a large beach but not much else bar a cafe and a kids playgroundbut to be honest is plenty for a chill out holiday. We loved our holiday and found the neighbours all lovely sociable people and would highly recommend for a nice rock pool old school holiday.

Really well equipped, except we would have liked a tumble dryer or a wash/drier combo. Unfortunately my husband and I are of an age when climbing over each other to get in and out of bed is not an option, also the twin beds are so close together there is danger of damage to knees and toes. We ended up sleeping in separate rooms (for the first time in 48 years), good job we were staying on our own! We were warned that the road to the cottage was rough and that was very, very true.
