Surrounded by 6 acres of farmland and enjoying lovely views which can be enjoyed from its private outdoor hot tub, The Rookery boasts a peaceful, rural position in the heart of east Lancashire’s beautiful Pendle district. This detached stone cottage with grass roof has been lovingly built by the owners to provide a comfortable and truly unique holiday home. Combining elements of rustic living with the industrial history of Lancashire, the owners have created an unusual and interesting space that is quite unlike any other holiday cottage. Industrial and steampunk influences, combined with bespoke craftsmanship and breathtaking views, will ensure that your stay at The Rookery is one that you will not forget.
On the ground floor is a large open plan living/kitchen/dining area, with a cosy wood burner, Chesterfield sofas, steampunk lamps, an original factory clock and a wardrobe steamer trunk cum coffee table owned by Colonel Jarl Warhlstrom, make this space rather impressive. The handcrafted kitchen, with stunning Belfast sink and polished concrete worktops, has a large central island created from an architect’s plan chest which serves as a great breakfast bar.
Accessed by a unique open-tread staircase is the first floor reading area. With its refurbished G-plan chairs, original factory lighting and gentlemen’s club wallpaper, this is a great place to chill out with a book or play a board game. Located off the reading area you will find two comfortable bedrooms. Both have bespoke lighting and Velux windows with great views over the surrounding countryside. The first floor accommodation is completed by the family bathroom. With black subway tiles and gold geometric border, sewing machine pedestal with glass basin, a huge copper profile shower and a cast iron roll-top bath that will easily fit two, this bathroom really has the wow factor.
Outdoors is a patio area with BBQ, perfect for al fresco dining, as well as a private 6-person hot tub. There is also plenty of parking so that you can leave the car behind and explore the beautiful countryside right on your doorstep.
The Rookery is located in the village of Roughlee, close to the Forest of Bowland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, in an area that is famous for its witches. The trials of The Pendle Witches in 1612 are among the most famous witch trials in English history, and the statue of Alice Nutter can be seen in the village. Follow in their trail and take a walk up Pendle Hill. Alternatively, why not try out some of the wonderful cycle routes in the area. There are several good pubs serving food within a few miles of the property, many of which welcome dogs. Barrowford, 2 miles, has a good variety of shops and eateries as well as a wine bar, restaurant and small supermarket.
Apart from great walking and beautiful scenery, there are plenty of wonderful places to visit within easy driving distance. Haworth and Brontë Country are just 15 miles away, and the market town of Skipton with its medieval castle is 18 miles. Lancashire’s Ribble Valley, with its picturesque villages and welcoming country inns, is within a 30-minute drive, the Yorkshire Dales can be reached in 40 minutes, and even the Lake District can be reached in just over an hour. There are several castles and houses worth visiting, including Gawthorpe Hall, 7 miles, Towneley Hall, 9 miles, and Bolton Abbey, 25 miles. Fishing can also be found in the vicinity. Shop and restaurant 2 miles, pub ½ mile.

Lovely house. Real wow factor. Location would be better in summer. Whilst walking distance to a couple of pubs that serve good food, not really suitable to walk to in dark and icy conditions. I missed having a dishwasher but otherwise all facilities you could wish for.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner; Thanks for taking the time to review us. We have now installed a dishwasher in the cottage.

Stunning cottage in a fantastic village. Magic hot tub, well used after our long walks in the beautiful countryside. Lovely wood burner, especially when lit! Very cosy when going and it’s raining outside. Design of cottage is very well thought out for everyone, including our doggies. Very nice little touches left by Danielle the owner. Will definitely visit againx

Great retreat with a secure garden which was wonderful for the dog. The design was quirky and interesting, whilst offering real comfort and ease of use. A few personal touches were missing, such as a welcome tray enabling you to make a drink on arrival without unpacking your car, and my daughter was less certain of the framed butterflies on her bedroom wall, but these are very small quibbles for such a beautiful holiday accommodation.

Response on behalf of the Owner; Thank you for your review. We do leave coffee, milk and sugar but after reading your review we have decided leaving milk is a good idea. We are also going to swap the welcome chocolates with a packet of local biscuits.

The cottage was heated well, which given the poor weather was essential. The kitchen could do with a dishwasher and when cooking the lack of good utensils and cooking implements was limiting, there was no casserole or spatula.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner; Thanks for your feedback and noticing our good heating system. We do have a metal spatula hung up however I will add a rubber spatula to the drawer. We also have a large brown oven dish with lid but will definitely add more kitchenware. As stated on the property description we do not have a dishwasher and this is the reason we are listed as 4 star rather than 5. We hope if you come back you will get better weather. Thank you.

Beautiful place very clean and well equipped view fabulous but was let down by 24 hour CCTV directed at the hot tub and directly into the back of the house which forced us to keep the curtains closed 24/7. There was not enough hot water for a bath and even though the owner claims the boiler is working we could not fill the bath which was very disappointing. The owner came everyday to clean the hot tub and even though we suggested we did it she wanted to do it herself which would have been fine at it been early morning but it was around 4pm - 5pm and this felt like an invasion of our privacy and also put us off going in the hot tub. If the CCTV was directed elsewhere and the hot water working we would have returned but sadly this place is not for us a couple with three children.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the Owner; Hi Lindsey, thank you for taking the time to write a review and appreciating the cleanliness of the house and the views. Unfortunately to protect the house we have CCTV pointed at the driveway, electric gates and all access points to the property. The CCTV cannot be accessed remotely, is not checked unless we were to be broken into and is deleted on leaving the property. This may mean that the hot tub area is partially in view through the wooden pergola. I did tell you where to find the cover some guests used to go over the top. We have since added more coverage by adding more foliage so this area is completely private and later in the year we will be turning this hot tub area into a fantastic hot tub room. I also need to test the hot tub each day due to legislation and do this at teatime as I work elsewhere during the day. We pride ourselves on the cleanliness of our hot tub and keeping our guests safe. As soon as you notified us of the hot water I called out the engineer who tested the hot water and the oil condensing combi boiler. We were able to run numerous hot baths but the tap must be on a low flow. The boiler was also serviced at the end of November. I have an invoice and pictures to support that all was working but I have added instructions in the bathroom for future guests. Thank you.
