Description

Thoughtfully designed, contemporary open plan accommodation with balcony and 25 mile views.

The Rock is located in the picturesque Forest of Dean, on the edge of the Wye Valley, which is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is a short forest walk from one of the finest viewpoints in southern England at Symonds Yat Rock. The River Wye meanders far below with spectacular far reaching views which has made it a very popular tourist destination since Victorian times. The forest was the royal hunting grounds of the Tudor kings and The Rock Inn, as it was formerly known, has its origin around that time. The Rock has not been a public house for many years but the two studios were built in what was the old skittle alley, and Forest Cottage is built on what was the site of the original stables for the old inn.
As this is a popular area for walking, guides and maps are provided to help you make the most of your stay. Cycling and mountain biking are also popular in the forest and bike storage is available. The area also provides plenty of opportunities for bird and wildlife watching, canoeing, climbing and even caving. Sheep are allowed to roam free within the statutory forest area and it is not unusual to see fallow and muntjac deer. Symonds Yat is home to peregrine falcon and goshawks are one of the more unusual birds to spot in the forest.
The Rock has a large private car park (from its heritage as a pub). The two studios and the cottage all have private patios leading to their own entrance so you are free to come and go as you please. All have views over the garden across open farmland to the Ruardean Valley stretching 25 miles to the Malvern Hills.
Forest Cottage is semi-detached, next to the owner’s home with a contemporary styled, open plan living/dining/kitchen area on the ground floor and a large upstairs bedroom with a kingsize bed and and separate shower room. This cottage is dog friendly and dogs can be exercised in the forest.
Ruardean Studio and Clearwell Studio are both ground floor, contemporary styled, open plan studios which enjoy fantastic views across the garden and open farmland. There is outdoor seating in which to enjoy a glass of wine and your favourite meals. These studios are pet free for those who may suffer with allergies.
Shop 2 miles, pub and restaurant ¾ mile.

It was a nice place to be. Only point: the heating is out during the day between 10.00 and 16.00 ours.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the Owner; Thanks for your review - The heating is actually on 24 hours a day. In the summer and early autumn, at certain times of the day during and during the night, the temperature sets back by 5 degrees. If you turn the thermostats up on both heaters and get no additional heating during a setback period then the temperature should be over 25 degrees C. We try to explain this in the room information but we are always on site to answer any queries. Anyway, we will make sure we explain this to other guests so thanks for the feedback.

Despite being just one room, it is thoughtfully laid out with loads of windows with a magnificent view of the valley, so doesn't feel cramped. It's got everything you need with a comfy king size bed and comfy sofa. And good seating area outside. There's some helpful map routes of local paths drawn up by the owner including to the local pub. Perfect spot for one or two people wanting a bit of peace and quiet in the countryside.

A wonderful home from home in an amazing geographical area. The studio is in a separate annexe to the former B&B and has its own access. It is equipped with everything you could possibly need (within reason), is cosy and comfortable with beautiful views of the countryside. All furniture and bathroom and kitchen units are in top condition and of top quality. There are not one but two balconies : one to the side and more private and one just in front of the studio. The owners are very friendly and helpful people always ready with good advice and recommendations and have a variety of hand-drawn maps that are much more helpful than any map (including OS maps) of the area ! It`s at the edge of the village and just across the road you`re straight into the forest with numerous walks for all abilities and distances. There are even electric car chargers (x2) available for use (for a fee) but this information is not widely known/available in the public domain (such as the various booking websites) ! The nearest shop is within a mile but if you`re looking for choice you`ll need to go to the next town (about 3 miles). Staying at Ruardean Studio definitely ticked all the boxes for us (a couple looking for long walks and peace and quiet) and would not hesitate to recommend or to return !
