This property is part of our English Country Cottages collection

An inspiring collection of properties chosen for their character, luxury and heritage, all graded 4 star and above.

A romantic retreat, this property is within easy reach of both the Norfolk Coast and Broad’s.

Aptly named, The Retreat offers detached, single-storey holiday accommodation, accessed 650 yards down a farm road, which is set adjacent to the owner’s home and lies within 30 acres of natural countryside on the edge of a SSSI (a conservation designation denoting a protected area). Rated ‘5 star’ by VisitEngland, the property features a private garden offering views across open countryside, this really is the perfect base for discerning guests wishing to escape the stresses and strains of everyday life, and has wonderful walks that start literally at the front door. Centrally located, there is a great deal to discover in all directions, and guests will be spoilt for choice when it comes to planning their day’s activities. Dillington is a small hamlet 2 miles away from the bustling market town of Dereham, which has a 9-hole golf course, cinema, bowling alley, leisure centre, restaurants and a market on Tuesdays and Fridays. The pretty, Georgian market town of Holt lies 4 miles inland from Blakeney, which is brimming with fabulous eating places, galleries, antiques and shops. It also has the famous ‘Poppy Line’, a heritage railway that runs from Holt to the coastal town of Sheringham. With beaches to the north west, the north and the east, there is a variety of seaside experiences to be had. There is picturesque Blakeney with its quay and nature reserve, Titchwell Marsh RSPB reserve, Brancaster Staithe, Burnham Deepdale, Morston seal trips, Wells-next-the-Sea with its narrow gauge railway, beautiful quay and quaint mix of artisan and traditional seaside shops and cafés, and Cromer with its famous promenade pier and sandy beach. For all the fun of the fair, choose Great Yarmouth or Hunstanton, both of which offer amusements and sandy beaches. Making time to visit the Broad’s is a must, and its worth hiring a day boat or joining a trip out to see the wildlife and scenic views. Not to be missed is a visit to historical Norwich, with its Norman castle, museums, cobbled streets of Elm Hill, cathedral, theatres, shops and restaurants. Closer to home, lies Pensthorpe Nature Reserve and Gressenhall Rural Life Museum. Foodies will not be disappointed either, with lots of great places to eat out, many of which offer seasonal local produce. Shop and pub 2 miles.

We really enjoyed our stay. We were a short drive from any super markets so that was easy and within approx 45 mins there was a variety of different beaches, little pubs or sea side towns to enjoy. The cottage was on the owners land up a secluded farm track so although you had privacy and felt set back from every day life, I felt very safe and secure and once out the drive you didnt need to travel far to the nearest small town if you did need anything from any shops. The cottage was lovely. Bed was super comfy, sofa nice and comfy and had everything in the kitchen you could possibly need. It was also spotless and clean and decor was also lovely. Lots of local information packs also available so you could use them to plan your days out. I would be happy to return and use as a base and venture out on different days out around Norfolk.

We spent a very relaxing break at this cottage, the location is very private and tranquil and the cottage is equipped and furnished to the highest standard and very clean. The welcome pack was much appreciated. There are many places to visit and the coast is not too far to drive. The owners are very helpful and live close by.

Perfect place for a couple to stay. Susan and Simon are warm and friendly and make sure that everything is just right. Away from noise, just birds singing, yet easy access to pubs, shops and coastal resorts.

Fantastic week here, great hosts and house spotless. The kitchen was so well equipped and, as we really do self cater, was an absolute joy. Living room comfy but smart. Only downside for us personally was the memory foam bed which we really weren't fond of and the dining chairs were a bit low, hence the small deduction for comfort but we would definitely return and recommend to others.

Very well laid out cottage with really friendly and helpful owners, who allowed us to do our own thing with no interference but were available if needed. Very impressed with everything..
