Description

An 18th century threshing barn with views towards the Shropshire Hills, and within easy reach of Ironbridge Gorge.

Peacefully situated within the extensive grounds of the Pitchford Estate, these four properties offer superb holiday accommodation. The Generals’ Quarters (UKC2646) is named after a previous owners of the hall, General Sir Robert and Charles Grant. Guests will be situated in the West Wing, the oldest part of the hall constructed in 1549 (but with beams dating back to the 1250s), and the Hall’s Northern Range. The accommodation will be based on The Tudors and the late Georgian period. Guests will notice the two distinct periods as they move around the General’s Quarters, and will be able to decide which period rooms they wish to sleep in.
Windy Mundy Farm (RNG) has been converted from an 18th-century threshing barn and deer shelter and is located on an old deer park at the centre of the estate. Built on top of a south-facing hill overlooking Row Brook, and part of a working arable farm, it is surrounded by fields of wheat and barley and has spectacular, far-reaching views towards the Shropshire hills. Enclosed by a long stone wall, the farm has its own courtyard garden with a terrace and barbecue.
Stockbatch Granary (RJ6) is reached by a mile-long drive passing through the mixed arable land of Stockbatch Farm, with its fields of corn encircled by woodland. It comprises an 18th-century granary, clapperboard barn, stables and cowsheds, and nestles on a south-facing slope, at the bottom of which a stream wends its way gently along. A courtyard garden enclosed by a red sandstone wall provides a pleasant sitting-out area from which to survey the countryside views.
Tree House Barn (RDDJ) is a sensitively restored detached barn conversion which enjoys views of the world famous Pitchford Tree House (the oldest tree house in the world).
Within 6 miles of each property is historic Shrewsbury with its fascinating architecture, castle, museums, fine shops and wealth of traditional inns and restaurants. Easily accessible is popular Church Stretton, and Shropshire’s finest town Ludlow, framed by the gentle Clee Hills, with its impressive castle, magnificent church, many half-timbered buildings and Georgian red-brick houses. Bridgnorth has what is reputed to be the steepest cliff railway in Britain and superb cliff-top walks overlooking the River Severn below. From here, during summer, the Severn Valley Railway’s steam train chugs the scenic 16-mile route to Kidderminster. Attingham Park (National Trust), Benthall Hall (National Trust), Ironbridge Gorge and the old market town of Much Wenlock (with its medieval priory) are all within easy driving distance. Riding, sailing, fishing, golf, pubs and restaurants locally. Shop 2 miles, pub and restaurant 5 miles.
Tree House Barn (RDDJ), Stockbatch Granary (RJ6), Windy Mundy Farm (RNG) and The Generals Quarters (UKC2646) can be booked together to accommodate up to 48 guests.

A great holiday with old university friends. House was just perfect for the occasion. Great facilities. The converted barn which extended into the existing farmhouse was amazing and great to relax in. It was good to have the large kitchen dining area with large table to eat in for say breakfast and the more formal setting for evening dinner in the converted barn, leading off from the kitchen. It was also great that most of the bedrooms had en suite facilities. Plenty of parking for the 6 cars between us. Shropshire is a great place to visit, very rural but with plenty to do. The countryside is very pretty.

The positives are that the house is big, the fire is fantastic and is very well equipped for large groups, in fact it was probably had some of the largest cooking pans we had ever had in a rented house. It was lovely and warm due to the fire and the main barn are was very sympathetically done and was a great space to eat and socialise. The rooms were comfortable although the beds were simple doubles, a shame as the bedrooms are large and bigger beds would make such a difference. We did have an issue but it was resolved by the Estate manager that day which was vey good. There were a few negatives but nothing that would prevent us from returning. The main issue is the water pressure in the showers which was very poor - everyone had to take it in turns which for a large group was not ideal. Also not every bathroom had a shower and as most people prefer them, bathrooms with them, had to be used my multiple people. The actual design of the house is a little awkward in terms of flow. Due to fact that the cars were generally parked at the back in the courtyard space, when entering the leaving the house the doors into the kitchen were used as the main doors. All the space to keep muddy and in our case, wet boots and jackets however was located by the front door on the other side of the kitchen. A small thing that was just annoying. The sink leaked and the dishwasher stopped working but a plumber was sent out and fixed them on the same day. We did however have a great time despite the weather

It's got the wow factor. Too many great features to list. A lot of care gone into design of buildings. Brilliant family weekend away. Well equipped kitchen. Big pans. Great walks straight from the door. Lovely and warm even in these freezing temperatures. Great space and great views. Very clean. Nice to learn about all the history of the buildings and area and about the conversion. BTW everyone in the area seems really friendly and happy. Great places to eat in Dorrington. Only minor point; too much political stuff in every room. Who wants Thatcher in the bedroom? Gave us a laugh though and I now know about macroeconomics lol. Still deserves top marks.

If you book Windy Mundy Farm you won't be disappointed. We stayed for New Year 2017 and thought it was an ideal cottage us. It is very clean and perfect for an extended family. Lots of space for all. As mentioned in previous reviews, we thought the room above the spiral staircase was quirky but pleased we didn't have to use as a bedroom. The rest of the bedrooms are clean with good comfy beds. The kitchen is huge with plenty of crockery, cutlery and pots and pans. We were able to have breakfast in the kitchen and evening meal round the huge table in the lounge. We were quite warm around the cottage, but found the lounge area to be a bit drafty with the open fire difficult to maintain. If this could be addressed it would be perfect.

A lot of dust and cobwebs, in the main room many of the lightbulbs were not working so more or less in the dark. Lovely house though, large and great for a big family get together.

How shall we celebrate a special birthday, how about family holiday with ages from 2 to 82. And this we did and Windy Mindy Farm providing all we needed, space, comfort, great facilities, safe space for the youngsters to play and fantastic scenery. All this and a caretaker who was most helpful. The upshot was a wonderful week in great surroundings and everyone enjoying themselves.

Simply delighted with the property - beyond our wildest dreams. The room above the spiral staircase really does need toilet facilities. Lots to do in the area - providing you've got a good SATNAV ! A wonderful place for a family holiday.
