Nestled away in the picturesque village of Redmire in the heart of Wensleydale, The Old Shop is the ideal location for guests wanting to enjoy a peaceful holiday in the magnificent Yorkshire Dales. Traditional in style and offering spacious and comfortable accommodations, guests will enjoy modern facilities alongside many original 1862 features in this historic property. The large living area has a comfortable sofa and armchairs set around a feature fireplace with a cosy electric wood burner-style heater. The kitchen is well equipped for your stay, featuring a dishwasher and washing machine. Upstairs accessed by open tread stairs, is a spacious four-bed family bedroom, with a super kingsize bed and two single beds, and an en-suite bathroom with shower over the bath.
Redmire village is situated in Wensleydale, around five miles from the market town of Leyburn. The village pub (formerly the Bolton Arms now The Redmire Village Pub ) has reopened after extensive refurbishment and is back serving food. We suggest booking if you would like to eat there.
Redmire is also the terminus of the Wensleydale Railway, a heritage railway that runs along a 22-mile track offering picturesque views of the local area and is host to the legendary Polar Express services in the weeks leading up to Christmas but presently the railway is only operating from Leyburn to Leeming Bar. It is a short walk across the fields to the village of Castle Bolton, where the castle, dating back to 1339, offers group tours, falconry exhibitions and a tea room serving lunches (please check opening hours beforehand).
There are many established public footpaths and cycle routes that lead directly from the village into the Yorkshire Dales and through some of the nearby traditional towns and villages, including Castle Bolton, West Witton, Aysgarth, Carperby and West Burton, and the Redmire Force waterfall on the river Ure. The bustling market town of Leyburn is only five miles away on quiet roads, offering many excellent pubs, restaurants and tea shops as well as a weekly traditional farmers’ market and Tennants Auction House, with its displays, events and exhibitions and a great restaurant. The popular racehorse village of Middleham lies just over six miles away from Redmire; once the home of Richard III, guests will be able to visit Middleham Castle as well as enjoy watching the world-class racehorses ride through the village as they are taken to the gallops in the fields beyond. The popular local attraction of The Forbidden Corner also makes an excellent day out for all the family, and don’t miss a visit to the stunning waterfalls at Aysgarth or a browse at the local art gallery.
