I have previously stayed close to this area, and always wanted to try a week at The Old Mill, and it did not disappoint. I took my mother, father, son and his friend with me on this occasion. Initially we made the mistake of entering the owners property, and not the cottage property. When we realised our faux pas we found the entrance to the cottage. Be prepared for some steep driving on some very narrow lanes, but this is what makes The Old Mill great, as it is a secluded area. The grounds are magnificent, well tended and exceptional, with a play area for younger children and a games room that has pool and table tennis. There is also a canoe and kayak in which to use on the small river that runs alongside the cottage. My son made a regular morning jaunt up and down the river in the canoe before breakfast. The cottage itself is beautiful and feels really homely as soon as you walk in. There is a large oak dining table where there is a gnome sneakily carved into it by the person who made the furniture. You have to realise that The Old Mill is a historical property, and as such the stairs are steep. My parents (who are in their mid seventies) were able to manage the first set of stairs, so they had the en suite room on the first floor, where I took the double bedroom on the second floor, and the two lads had the remaining bedroom. The welcome we got from the owner was very warm and very welcoming, and she explained everything about the property to us in a precise way. She was also great with the two lads and took them to the games room, canoe and kayaks, and explained the rules about using them. A very nice lady. We also had a welcome pack of biscuits and cakes waiting for us, and towels and slippers were provided in the bedrooms. Non of my party could find anything to complain about as The Old Mill exceeded our expectations. We particularly enjoyed the peace and seclusion of the property.

We went to Old Mill Cottage 25 years ago and it was a very different experience to this one ... both very enjoyable but this time it was very much home from home. If I could give Julia and John an 11 I would. The house and surroundings are absolutely perfect and totally unique. The cottage was welcoming and the welcome pack was very much appreciated (even down to the milk in the fridge for a well earned cuppa 😍) and the wine and flowers were a lovely touch. This will not be our last visit and it certainly won’t be another 25 years. Can’t wait to go again next year. Thank you for a wonderful weeks holiday x

The down rated review and reason behind that we feel unable to recommend a stay isn’t taken lightly as it should also be noted there are many good/excellent things, but safety during our stay we believe made it at times very unrelaxing experience also. The cause of our safety concerns was the stairs. The tread is small, banasters could be improved and a night light i’d stongly suggest given the need to use bathroom at night. During our stay with 4-adults one under 2 and a baby, two adults and the under 2 had incidents. 2nd consideration is access to Littlebeck requires traveling up/down 30 degree narrow twisting roads, which perhaps there are smother routes, but not by much and wouldn’t stop need for the final entry to the cottage, where we had a near collision pulling out from, there is a mirror placed but the strobe gradient means motorists are often challenged to stop. It’s these issues we believe due to not living with daily pose very challenging to a one week holiday maker. Yet to conclude, you would be hard pressed to find more accommodating owners or a location that offers the facilities on site with a location where you be able to fully enjoy what the area has to offer.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner; We are sorry that you felt you had issues with the stairs and the approach roads in and out of Littlebeck and this impacted on your stay. The cottage information clearly states that there are steep stairs. The bannister is secure and is a full bannister on the right hand side of the stairs. There are lights at the top of both staircases which could be switched on. We are disappointed that the guest didn’t approach us if a night light and safety gate was required as both are available and we are on site. The typical roads in and out of the North Yorkshire moors are steep and winding in places. Our cottage information states that there are steep hills on the surrounding roads. We would however like to thank you for the positive comments.

Amazing cottage, very quiet/relaxing and private but also close to lots of attractions for days out. Everything you could want in the kitchen for cooking, unlike some cottages. Lovely big bath, very clean. Wi-fi great, freeview and plenty of DVDs to chose from. Cant fault it at all, 10/10. Great place to stay!!!! Oh yeah and saw a badger one night!!

An amazing spot to spend a family holiday together. Despite being December we were out enjoying the garden or the local countryside every day. Beautifully decorated for Christmas and the Kitchen had everything we could have wanted to cook Christmas dinner.
