We - my partner, myself and our dog - stayed at the Old Chapel this Christmas (2018) and were extremely disappointed. Except for the location which is great (assuming of course you have a car) I would not recommend staying here. Comfort and Equipment: - The entire house smells of mould. They have put oil defusers in all of the rooms to try to hide this, however it doesn't work. We ended up moving the headboard of the bed as it was dirty and smelt odd, behind it we found that the whole wall had black mould. - The furniture in the cottage is very hold and is in need of updating. The damp and mouldy cottage has aged everything (which was possibly second hand already) making the whole place feel very tired. Location: - Fantastic location if you are looking to hide away for a while with almost zero human contact. Cleanliness: - Cleanliness was appalling. For example the microwave still had food splashed on the top and sides from previous visitors and the oven has not been clean for a long time and still had remains of a roast dinner (as well as many other dinners). The plates and the kitchen surfaces had a coating of grease over them. All of the cloths in the kitchen had old stains on them as well as scorch marks. - As well as the headboard of the bed smelling, the bed sheets had stains. - The bathrooms hadn't been cleaned; the towel rails were coated in dust, hairs were everywhere, the mats had stains on them, the little bottles of product were stuck to the shelves with some blackish goo, and the use of some very standard limescale remover wouldn't be a bad idea. Local amenities: - None. This isn't a negative against the cottage, but if you don't have access to a car you aren't leaving. Overall: - Very disappointed that this place is so expensive. In the same price range we've stayed at cottages which were on par with 5 star hotels. This cottage is depressing and should be avoided until the owners invest in it to firstly clean it properly and deal with the worrying mould and damp issue, and secondly research other cottages at that price level. If they want to be charging that much then they should see what is expected for that price range.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the Owner; We are very disappointed with this review. The property was comprehensively refurbished in 2015 and as can be seen from previous reviews, most people seem very happy with the property and location. We had a couple with two children in the cottage last weekend and they emailed today to say that they had a great time. We will look into all the issues raised. Since the property was refurbished in spring 2015, we have had 42 reviews as follows: 12 reviewers gave a mark of 10 18 reviewers gave a mark of 9 11 reviewers gave a mark of 8 1 reviewer gave a mark of 5 (didn't like the rural location) This gives as average of 8.9 To get a review of 1/10 is totally against the view of all other reviews.

A great cottage in a great location. Very well presented and equipped. Spotlessly clean and thoughtfully refurbished.

A comfortable house with all the necessary amenities. A pity we couldn't get the TV to work in spite of instructions.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner; We are pleased this guest found The Old Chapel a comfortable house with all the necessary amenities. We are perplexed about her not being able to get the TV to work. We were at the property immediately after her visit and the TV was fine. We are always available on the telephone if visitors cannot work any of the appliances.
