Description

This is an ideal property for that relaxed break in this beautiful area of Wiltshire, with easy access to Bath.

The Mission Hall (ref 30511) and Sursum Vestry (ref 30512) sit side by side, yet are both individually private, fenced off between the two. The studio was originally The Mission Hall for the village, and this property has been carefully renovated to provide a comfortable and stylish holiday home with a unique character and peaceful sitting out area. Sursum Vestry is a one bedroomed property, with a wonderful large decking area to the front of the property, which is built around some trees and illuminated at night. Both have far reaching views through the trees. Situated within the Cotswold Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and only 4 miles from Bath, famous for its Georgian architecture and sweeping crescents, the abbey, Pulteney Bridge and the Roman spa baths. Lacock village and abbey are nearby. Local amenities are only 1 mile away in the pretty village of Box, and nearby there is a regular bus service into the city of Bath. There are many local attractions within a short distance. Visit the historic towns of Corsham and Bradford on Avon, and within a short drive of the World Heritage sites of Stonehenge, Avebury and the Cotswolds. Numerous National Trust Properties, stately homes such as Longleat House Safari Park, Stourhead and Corsham Court. Excellent walking, riding, boating, fishing and golfing can be found in the immediate area. Shop, pub and restaurant 1 mile.

Ground floor: Living/dining room/kitchen with patio doors, beams and stone floor. Open tread stairs to first floor: 1 double bedroom with en-suite bathroom with shower over roll-top bath and toilet.

Gas central heating included. Table-top freezer. Decking area. Enclosed gravelled courtyard with terrace, sitting-out area and furniture. NB: 2 steps to decking area.

Both properties: Electricity, bed linen and towels included. Freeview TV. DVD. Electric cooker. Use of owner’s washing machine. Dishwasher. Wi-fi. Parking (2 cars). No smoking.

Although a nice property we found that the bath was difficult to get in and out of due to the sloping ceiling. The 2 bed posts at the bottom of the bed are quite dangerous as my husband stretched out in the night and smacked his ankle on one of them. On the plus side it was nice and warm and it was good to get away from the hustle and bustle. But maybe this property is better for shorter people!!

First the positive. We enjoyed our stay at the vestry, it was very quiet. The downstairs was really cosy and bright and very well equipped and the welcome basket of goodies was very much appreciated. And sorry but here is the negative. Upstairs however was a disappointment, yes the pictures do show sloping ceilings as the whole of upstairs is built into the eaves but it's a bit deceiving from the pictures. We are both of average height I would say and the only place you could stand up straight in the bedroom was in the middle of the room at the foot of the bed, so getting into bed meant you had to bend virtually double in order not to bang your head. There was no mirror with a socket nearby to do your hair which is a must especially for ladies. A suggestion would be to perhaps provide a mirror that can be carried to a socket? The bathroom was barely more than a cupboard with the only standing room being about 3 feet from the door. Getting out of the bath was very difficult and you certainly couldn't stand up to get out of it. We were very lucky to have some beautiful weather whilst we were there and would have sat outside but as people have mentioned in reviews before, the cushions were dirty having been left out in bad weather. Perhaps a cupboard/shed on the patio for the cushions to be put away when not in use? I don't like leaving negative reviews but we have stayed in quite a few properties throughout the country and I can only judge the Vestry against other properties of the same size and price.

This is a place where you can relax and take it easy. The cottage is set among trees and it is easy to feel at one with nature. The fixtures and fitting give comfort with a rustic feel. The Vestry can be used as a base for exploration of the locality.

Elderly or tall people should not choose this cottage as the bathroom is very impractible under a steep sloping roof. Furthermore the sofas were uncomfortable and stained. The sitting area outside could have been nice, but the cushions were too dirty too sit on. Even after a second cleaning service we did not really feel comfortable , although the bed was good and the owner did her best to provide us with new pans and extra cleaning.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the Owner; Firstly thank you very much for your review of Sursum Vestry. We feel your score of 4 out of 10 is very unfair as we normally achieve 8 plus. Your cleaning requirements were somewhat excessive and after 3 professional cleaner visits you were still not happy. The property is very quirky and head heights are slightly comprised in the bedroom and bathroom areas, exactly as the photos on the website. Our guests usually love the whole experience of being nestled in amongst the trees in the beautiful Wiltshire countryside in a very private quiet cottage escape. We are sorry you didn't feel the same.
