Description

A beautifully presented, two bed historic barn conversion situated on a small peaceful farm in the Devon countryside, close to North Cornwall’s sandy beaches.

Nestled within the heart of the glorious Devon countryside, The Milking Parlour is a delightful architect designed barn conversion using traditional materials and crafts. This beautifully converted, Grade II* listed, 16th-century thatched barn sits within the owner’s medieval farmstead at Hole (Old English: meaning ‘Cut into a hillside’), where records date back to 1330 when it was owned by one ‘William de Hole’. The accommodation has been entirely designed with visitor comfort and convenience in mind, with a cosy wood burner and beautiful twin limestone basins.
Guests are welcome to explore the owners’ 48-acres of organic, species-rich, conservation pasture, which has been recognised as a Devon County Wildlife Site because of the wide range of rare flora and fauna found here. From the top fields there are wonderful far-reaching views of Dartmoor looking south, and distant Exmoor in the other direction. In the lower fields there is also a pretty and secluded wildlife lake. As the farm has no near neighbours and faces Dartmoor, the night sky is jet black and stargazing is fantastic. The larger stars, planets and constellations can easily be spotted with the naked eye. Young and old can enjoy seeing the animals on the farm, which include chickens providing fresh daily eggs, ducks, geese, goats, cows and donkeys. The owners even have their own apiary (beehives) which provide delicious honey.
The Milking Parlour really is the perfect hideaway for those wishing to escape the hustle and bustle and being equidistant between Dartmoor and the north Cornish coast. It is also an ideal base to explore both Devon and Cornwall. The pretty market towns of Hatherleigh and Holsworthy are under 15 minutes’ drive away, Okehampton with its larger selection of shops is within 20 minutes, and Bude’s superb sandy beaches with excellent surfing along with breathtaking coastal walking, is just 16 miles away, approximately 30 minutes’ drive. South of Bude can be found the pretty Cornish coastal village of Boscastle, and adjacent is the historic village of Tintagel all within an easy drive. Further afield, The Eden Project can easily be reached. Dartmoor National Park is a must for nature lovers and there are many walks nearby including The Tarka Trail and The Granite Way, which are ideal for both walkers and cyclists. Other nearby attractions include the RHS gardens at Rosemoor, many National Trust properties including Castle Drogo, Buckland Abbey, Cotehele, The Finch Foundry and Lydford Gorge, English Heritage properties including Okehampton Castle, Launceston Castle, Tintagel Castle and not forgetting the world renowned Gnome Reserve at Bradworthy! There is a wide range of excellent local pubs and restaurants in the area for the drinkers and foodies, as well as farm shops and farmers markets selling wonderful local produce. Beach 16 miles. Shop, pub and restaurant 1 mile.

The Milking Parlour is absolutely lovely, as are the owners Penny & Paul, who made us feel very welcome. The location is central & beautiful, but very remote. The nearest shops & pub/restaurant are a good walk away, along a winding country road. The cottage had everything we needed for our week-long stay, & we were even able to get our groceries delivered by Tesco. We had a lovely welcome basket left for us containing fresh eggs, milk, butter, bread, cereals & biscuits, & we bought fresh honey - the money from which is used to buy feed for the animals. Talking of animals - this place is not for you if you don't like insects or animals. We regularly shared the patio area with the 3 resident hens & had to a spider sweep of the bedrooms every night before we went to bed! Haha. Overall, one of the nicest places we have stayed in central Devon. We would definitely go back.

Very friendly owners, quiet place to relax. Nicely renovated old farm building on two levels. Fully equipped kitchen. Several animals (hens, donkeys, ducks, goats) on site. Many attractions within approx. one hour driving distance (Dartmoor, coast, Manor houses).
