This superb detached property has been extended to provide an extremely light and spacious retreat for couples or families. Set in 2½ acres with gated entry, with partial agricultural land and sloping banks to a gently flowing stream, this is a wonderful spot to enjoy alfresco dining or relax in the state of the art spa hot tub with mood lighting, sound system and central drinks table! With families in mind, there is also an outside games room with pool table, table football and games. The huge open-plan living/dining area has plenty of natural light with full length windows and bi-folding doors across the width of the room, as well as an electric wood burner within a brick fire surround. Solid oak flooring and doors have been skilfully fitted, and there is a well-equipped kitchen with a professional chefs range with induction hob and slate tiled floor. Three of the bedrooms are on the ground floor, two of which are twin rooms, with a shared family bathroom, and on the first floor there are two en-suite bedrooms. All of the double beds are complete with luxurious Vi-Spring mattresses.

The owner (formerly a Michelin-starred chef) resides in a renowned restaurant serving fine English/French Gourmand cuisine, 800 yards away, and there are two pubs within a 5-minute drive. There is so much to do in this popular area all year round. The nearest town is Fordingbridge on the banks of the River Avon. It was recorded in the Domesday Book and the first Great Bridge, built in medieval times, is upstream from the ford and is a major feature of the town with its seven graceful arches. The town has developed into a wonderful place for visitors with its beautiful scenery, nature havens, cycleways and welcoming people. There is a museum, Alderholt Mill, dating back to the 15th century, which serves cream teas at weekends; they also offer milling demonstrations, and Braemore Church exhibits many Saxon features, and is believed to have been founded soon after. Within easy driving distance are beaches at Bournemouth, Poole, Sandbanks and Studland Bay. Also within easy reach are Poole Nature Reserve, Brownsea Island, and to the west, The Purbecks, Corfe Castle, and Jurassic coastline.

Moors Valley is a popular place to visit and is dog friendly, and offers scenic walks and excellent wildlife spotting. There are a host of recreational activities such as angling, orienteering, cycle hire, golf, Go Ape Treetop Adventure, Forest Segway, walking groups, canoeing and pétanque. Avon Heath is also nearby and is ideal for keen walkers. There are various fishing lakes (mainly carp) and golf courses in the area too. The New Forest National Park is easily accessible, which provides miles of scenic walks and a network of bridle paths and footpaths, and you can often find the ponies and cattle roaming the streets in one of the many picturesque villages. There is a waterpark not far away, as well as a leisure centre with swimming pool.

The property is very convenient for road links to the beautiful cathedral cities of Winchester and Salisbury, National Trust homes and gardens, including Forde Abbey and Kingston Lacey, Christchurch’s harbour, Paultons Park, Adventure Wonderland and Stonehenge. Other attractions include Marwell Zoo, Monkey World, Beaulieu Motor Museum, Bovington Tank Museum, the New Forest Otter and Owl Park and maritime Southampton. Beach 12 miles. Shop ½ mile, pub and restaurant 330 yards.

Great family celebration location with great proximity to New Forest attractions including pubs and restaurants. A couple of observations that would have made the experience even more enjoyable: 1. The dish washer is very quirky and if a normal domestic one was installed life would have been so much simpler. 2. The water pressure is insufficient for the number of potential users in the property. Probably nothing to be done but, if that is the case, a little bit of forewarning so that showers could be organised would have been helpful. 3. Although there was plenty of hanging space in the bedrooms additional cabinet storage would be helpful.

Response on behalf of the owner; I am really glad you enjoyed your stay but I am a little surprised & perplexed by your observations. The semi professional dishwasher is much faster, efficient & easier to use than a domestic one. The hot water is a pressurised Mega Flow tank system & tested with all 3 showers in use on instalment. We do have more storage space in the utility room where there is a 2nd back up fridge & separate freezer. Thank you for staying with us & best wishes.

My family spent three nights at this very spacious house. Our grandchildren enjoyed playing in the garden where there is plenty of room for ball games. The open plan layout works very well as there are two large comfortable sofas and two large armchairs. The dining table seats ten.

We all had a lovely family weekend holiday at the shandwick cottage, it was equipped with everything you needed and more! Would definitely recommend! Dog friendly too! The center of the new forest was only a 20 minute drive away with lots to see and do for all!

Lovely home and run by lovely people. Top marks. A 9 for local amenities as I had a couple of teenagers with me and had to drop off and pick up at pubs. Couldn’t get a taxi. All else Brill
