English Country Cottages

An inspiring collection of properties chosen for their character, luxury and heritage, all graded 4 star and above.

This stunning property sits in the grounds of Newstead Abbey, with spectacular views and many luxury features throughout.

This beautifully renovated property is perfectly situated in the grounds of historic Newstead Abbey Park. Here you will be walking in the footsteps of the classic romantic poet, George Gordon Byron, and enjoying spectacular views over the lake, which was created by Thomas Wildman around 1820. The abbey is steeped in history and was founded as a monastic house in the late 12th century, and to this day, the house retains much of its medieval character along with the array of stunning gardens to explore.
As you traverse the commanding front entrance into the spacious hall of this property, you will feel immediate escape from the outside world. Through glass double doors to your right is the first of two reception rooms, offering something to entertain all ages, with its adjoining snug providing a quiet place to read and reflect. To your left is a generous bedroom with a king size bed and en-suite with a walk in shower. Directly ahead at the heart of the house is a large, welcoming, open-plan kitchen/dining room with a fantastic outlook over the patio and superbly maintained gardens. A magnificent aga and American-style fridge/freezer, spa filter taps and a wine cooler are on hand to enjoy. Adjoining this on one side is a large utility area, whilst on the other, an impressive, formal living room with wrap-round windows. Upstairs are a further two large bedrooms and a fourth bedroom with bunk beds suitable for adults or children. The master bedroom is accessed through a dressing room adjoining a generously sized family bathroom with Jacuzzi bath and shower.
The gardens nestle amongst mature trees and shrubs and also boast a superb summerhouse to relax in whilst enjoying the lake views. Situated within the grounds of Newstead Abbey Park, The Gun Room is only a few minutes’ walk from many of the park’s unique features, including the abbey with café, Byron’s own fort and the plethora of gardens.
Mansfield, Nottingham, Newark and Southwell are all close by and local attractions include Sherwood Forest, Clumber Park, Rufford Abbey Country Park, Wollaton Park, White Post Farm, Robin Hood’s Wheel Gate Park and Papplewick Pumping Station. The surrounding area is perfect for walkers and cyclists with many footpaths, tracks and woodland walks close by, along with a selection of pubs, restaurants and local amenities. The Gun Room makes a convenient and comfortable base for couples or families from which to enjoy the Peak District and Nottinghamshire.
Whether you are celebrating an occasion or just spending time with friends or family, this is the perfect place to spend your time together. Shop 1½ miles, pub and restaurant 1 mile.

Excellent cottage and facilities in a great location with walks in the grounds of the abbey once the public had left a real treat. The lake and all its wildlife just at the end of the garden. We would recommend this cottage to anyone and would return.

The Gun House is a lovely spacious house which is ideal for a gathering of mixed ages. We had three children under the age of four and they were very well catered for. The large box of toys was a massive hit as was the collection of books and DVDs. There is plenty of space so the house never seemed crowded. Having four televisions was a bonus!

We had a fabulous weekend, it’s a wonderful house in a brilliant location (and we loved the peafowl in the garden!). The electric oven seemed not to be working and we couldn’t get the media mirror to tune in, but we let the owner know and these things can be fixed - we have every intention of returning.

Had a great time , we all loved it and will be back, my only criticism would be the aga and oven could be a bit cleaner as could the patio doors, they were smeared with finger prints, also a larger mirror in the upstairs bathroom would be very handy as would a towel rail near the sink to put a hand towel on, minor issues I know but would help. The welcome gift was amazing we were very pleased with that, we will book again. Thank you, our grandchildren would like to add they loved the peacocks coming right up to the patio doors and the ducks and swans in the lake 10 out of 10

Fantastic Place - The downstairs especially is very well laid out for family living. We loved the fact the kids all had a separate 'snug' to play in. The large family kitchen was amazing.

We loved our time at the Gun Room. We chose it for our Xmas break (2017) and it was perfect for our family - two couples, my elderly mother, a teenager and a toddler. The house was really like a home from home, with all the equipment you would expect to find to have a relaxing break. The bedrooms were comfortable, and we liked the extra touches like toys and games for the kids, the Wii, the laundry room and beautiful welcome pack. It was great cooking our Christmas Day meal in the AGA! We enjoyed strolling in garden, down to the water and over to the Abbey. The owner was accessible and friendly and I’ll never forget being greeted by the gorgeous peacocks as we ate breakfast. We would definitely book again.
