This is a lovely detached lodge set in the grounds of the Honicombe Manor Park, it is only 20-minutes away from Tavistock and also has on-site facilities.

This well-appointed, comfortable, Scandinavian-style holiday lodge is set in a rural location in the grounds of Honicombe Manor Park. Nestling on the banks of the River Tamar, this is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and Cornish Mining World Heritage Site.
This 3 bedroom lodge would suit families during the summer and couples out of season looking for a quiet base to get away from it all, whilst enjoying all that this part of Cornwall has to offer. Close to the border between Devon and Cornwall, this is a superb location from which to explore a wider region. The historic market town of Tavistock is just a 20-minute drive away, or locally you can catch the train from Gunnislake to Plymouth, or take a boat trip along the meandering River Tamar from the pretty riverside village of Calstock. There is a donkey park and children’s farm just ½ mile away. Full pool and gym membership is included for the on-site facilities which are available from April to October. Beach 20 miles. Shop, pub and restaurant 1 mile.

Ground floor: 3 bedrooms: 1 double with patio door, 1 twin, 1 single with additional single (2ft 6in). Bathroom with shower over bath and toilet. Shower room with toilet. First floor: Living room with patio doors/kitchen with dining area.

Although the lodge is very well equipped and decorated to a high standard we would not return and were very disappointed by the terrible and overpowering smell of must and damp downstairs. The master bedroom was awful compounded by the fact you cannot leave a window open/on window lock as it only has an external door and the moisture from the ensuite adds to the damp. The smell when laying in bed ruined our holiday and we considered leaving after the 1st night, but as our only holiday this year, and our first break away in 2 years, we didn't want to miss out. The cleaners brought us shake n vac,air freshners and plug ins to help mask the odour but it didn't make much difference....instead we smoothered our pillow cases in olbas oil and tried our best to ignore it. The most disgusting thing in this room though was the daily influx of slugs that would appear before bed each evening. Thus each night involved a pre bed ritual of removing slugs and spraying air freshner (not exactly how you imagine celebrating the holiday you've looked forward to all year). The mattress also needs replacing as it is very lumpy/uncomfortable. Bedroom 2 and 3 were also very musty, so much so, we could not unpack our babies clothes in bedroom 3 as the drawers smelt so bad and the built in wardrobe in bedroom 2 was very smelly. The shower room had a broken loose toilet seat and loose tap. Upstairs the kitchen was excellent with more than expected kitchenware. The sofas in the lounge have definitely seen better days but otherwise a very nice open plan room and no musty damp smell upstairs. The highchair was filthy on arrival though,i don't think it had been properly cleaned in months. Our score is inflated by the fact the lodge was generally very clean i.e. well hoovered, dusted, spotless kitchen & bathroom. It is just a real shame we spent so much money and were left disappointed by the god awful smell which resulted in us having to wash everything when we got home...even the clothes and coats we didnt use all week where they reeked. Despite the issues mentioned, two pros are the proximity to the swimming pool and its in a good position to explore cornwall/bodmin. Overall a very disappointing experience.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner; We apologise for the delay in responding to your comments as our housekeeper has been on holiday. We live a considerable distance away and are unable to investigate ourselves. Having spoken with our housekeeper we are assured that the musty smell described is not the result of the property being damp. There is no evidence of mould or signs of structural damp problems. The lodge is located in a woodland setting by a small stream, we believe the odour is a natural environmental feature. We were genuinely puzzled by the slug plague as none of us have ever seen a slug on that patio. We are sure our housekeeper would have been able to sort this out had it been reported at the time. The high chair was unclean at the time of the guests somewhat early arrival, however this was remedied when the housekeeper called to inspect the condition of the property. The bed in the main bedroom was purchased in 2015. It may be a little soft for those who prefer a firmer mattress but it is definitely not worn out.
