Description

This stunning 19th-century church promises a memorable holiday, with its stained glass windows, vaulted ceilings, wood burners and large garden.

Located in the rural hamlet of Hollocombe in mid-Devon, this stunning converted church of St. Michaels & All Angels was built by the Earl of Portsmouth in 1891 and has one of only two Saddleback towers in Devon. It was decommissioned in 1978 and has been beautifully and sympathetically restored and converted to provide a wonderful unique country retreat with historic charm. Ideal for a relaxing break or to celebrate a special occasion, this detached property retains many of its original features that have been blended together to create a beautiful holiday home. From the vaulted ceilings in the bedrooms and stained glass windows, to the large inviting living room with wood burner, original vestry with second wood burner and state-of-the-art kitchen, this is a property promising a memorable holiday. Outside the garden has a large patio area providing the perfect spot to enjoy peace and tranquillity, as well as for al fresco dining. There are some great public footpaths and bridleways directly from the house into the surrounding countryside. Just to reassure you, there is no graveyard at this property!

The nearby villages of Winkleigh, 1½ miles, Chulmleigh and Dolton, both 4 miles, have local shops, coffee shops and pubs. The beautiful Tarka trail (30 miles long) can be accessed from various little towns and villages nearby perfect for cycling or walking. Both Exmoor and Dartmoor National Parks can be reached within 25 minutes, or take the local train which provides easy access to both Exeter and Barnstaple. The popular market town of South Molton has a weekly farmers’ market and a variety of shops, pubs and restaurants. Barnstaple, 12 miles, has a theatre, cinema, leisure activities, Museum of Barnstaple and North Devon, Pannier Market, 14th-century St Anne’s Chapel and Queen Anne’s Walk. Other family attractions in the area include RHS Gardens at Rosemoor, The Big Sheep, The Milky Way, Exmoor Zoo and Combe Martin Wildlife and Dinosaur Park and the beautiful Clovelly. Spectacular beaches all around Devon can be easily reached from this central location. Sailing, windsurfing and fishing are available at Tamar Lakes and Roadford Lake. Excellent golf courses can be found in the area together with game shooting and fishing. Shop 2 miles, pub 1 mile.

    One of the best places we’ve ever stayed. We loved it so much that we are returning for Christmas this year. A fantastic place to stay, extremely well equipped and welcomed by the lovely Gilly who thinks of everything to make your stay so special!
